In laymen's terms, "Peak Oil" refers to the time when the oil supply will not be able to keep up with rising demand, possibly causing great economic hardships, vast changes in lifestyles, and various other consequences.
Once we reach Peak Oil, production will begin to slip, driving the price of oil higher and higher. What many people don't realize is that we rely on oil for much more than electricity and gasoline. Hundreds of thousands of products, such as plastic, are created using petroleum extracts. Most important, however, is agriculture. Our food is produced using fertilizer created from these resources, it is harvested using equipment that runs off fuel, and then transported across the country.
The predicted timeframe for the occurrence of Peak Oil ranges from the present-day, to 2037 (the official estimate of the United States Department of Energy).
