Scrollsaw Portraits

One aspect of scrollsaw art that I have taken up is scrollsaw portraits.  That is, taking a photograph and turning it into a piece of scrollsaw art.  The easiest way to describe it is to show you.

Here’s an example:

 And another:

Here's one that was derived from an album cover:

Jim Morrison Shadow Box

I haven’t framed all the work yet, but you can see the detail that can be realized in wood.  Within reason, I can take any reasonable photo and create a similar keepsake in wood.  I say ‘within reason’ because there will undoubtedly be some photos that I won’t be able to do this with.  There are a variety of factors that could affect this work – clarity, contrast, detail, granularity, and so on, and I can’t promise anything without seeing the photo in question.

Contact me directly if you have any questions, or if you have a photo you would like to preserve in wood.

Legal stuff:  As you probably know, photos taken by a photo studio are automatically copyrighted to the studio that took them.  You can not simply take a studio photo to any 1-hour photo shop to make copies – a legitimate photo center won’t do it without seeing a copyright release from the originating studio.

Similarly, I can not create a wooden portrait from a studio photo without a copyright release.  All of the larger photo studios have a defined process for requesting a copyright release which must be completed before this work starts.  Some studios charge a release fee, others do not.  Smaller studios also have copyright rights as well, but may not have a defined process.  Nonetheless, this needs to be done.  I will be glad to contact the studio on your behalf to obtain the necessary release if you prefer.
