Quill Ode For Abbie Quill

by Shari Mathias

What a silly expression you have when you look at me
You must think I’m nuts
As if growling at your reflection
And eating crickets is normal.
Still, I have to admit that you are often better company
Than most humans.
You listen attentively when I go on and on
And never tire of the same games
(Though I need to find new hiding places).
You’re good for a laugh most days.
(Playing with your food – honestly!)
So smart that I wonder what goes on in that head of yours
And if your groans are you trying to tell me something
(Sorry girl, I don’t speak dog).
What a loss it would have been
If we hadn’t rescued you
Or you rescued us
