Change Is In the Air
As the wheel of the year turns, cool breezes and falling leaves appear around us. This change makes us aware of how perfectly appointed opal is as the birthstone for October. Opal, much like October, is a constant changing of color and emotion.
Believed in ancient times, to have been created by lightning striking the earth, the gem can be traced all the way back to ancient Australian aboriginies. Opals can be found all over the world, displaying different characteristics from different areas. 95 per cent of opals come from Australia, but they can also be found in Mexico, Brazil, Nevada and many other places. The variety of color that can occur in different climates ranges from bright reds to deep blacks.
Opals contain moisture and should not be kept in an environment without moisture because it can cause crazing (small fissures in the stone from heat and dryness).
It is said that when worn opals bring out the best personality, maintain their excellent health, and help find true love. Additionaly, Pink Tourmaline is another option for those born in the month of October. The color of the gem varies from very light pink to a deep red evoking emotions of joy and seduction. It is said to protect the wearer from danger and misfortune.
Tourmaline is mined all over the world and is found in serveral colors. Legend says that tourmaline comes in so many variations because it traveled across a rainbow where it gathered all the spectrum. Sometimes several colors occur naturally in the same gemstone, known as bi or tri color tourmaline. The most famous of these maulticolor combanations is the Watermelon Tourmaline where the gem starts in its core as a deep pink and then switches to a green border. This fun gem is great for someone who wants the pink tourmaline for October and an exciting rareity also.
