The Passion of Red
No other stone evokes the passion and power in the way that a ruby does. It is an alluring stone that simbolizes life and good health. The ruby is mentioned in lore all over the world in different religions and regions spanning hundreds of years.

The ruby is actually part of the corundum family, which is also where sapphires originate from. Pure corundum is colorless. Slight traces of the color creating elements such as chrome, iron, titanium or vanadium are responsible for the ruby's hue. Chrome is what tinted the stones millions of years ago when rubies were being created. Chrome, however, is also responsible for the fissures and irregularities within the crystals. Larger, fine quality rubies are harder to come by because only a very few can grow undisturbed by the natural crystal properties.

Before the 19th century the close relationship between rubies and sapphires was not known and garnets and spinels were often thought to be variations of the ruby. The ruby is one of the most durable stones reaching a nine on the Mohs scale, making it a great stone for all types of jewelry and solidifying its beauty for years to come.

Remember to make sure your jewelry is still in place before and after swimming this summer.
Sunscreen and other lotions get trapped inside rings, dulling them, if they are worn during application. To keep your jewelry as sparkly as possible, remove it while putting on lotion and sunscreen.
