                   - highly varied in form

Italian Romantic continued the development of the Classical Italian tradition.

   Types:
        
OPERA SERIA - melodrama
        
OPERA BUFFA - number styles featuring arias, recitative and ensembles.
        
FRENCH GRAND OPERA - emphasis on virtuoso singing, spectacular staging
                                                      and brilliant ballet.
        
FRENCH OPERA COMIQUE - passage of spoken dialogue
        
FRENCH OPERA LYRIQUE - combines opera comique and grand opera
                                                 - sentimental plots set 2 melodious music

       
       GERMAN MUSIC DRAMA - idealistic attempt to fuse music, poetry, drama and
                                                       visual arts.
       
CHORAL MUSIC - did not focus literally in Romantic period
       
SONG CYCLES - set of songs written by one composer usually on text by
                                     one poet

             - Character piece - generic term for works (prelude, intermezzo, nocturne,
                                                impromptu, song with words, rhapsody)
                             - written in piano appeared in chamber music and
