*Hitler received only 36.8 % of the poplular vote for president.  Others persuaded elected president Hindenberg to appoint Hitler chancellor.  Through a series of events including but not limited to a fire being used as a justification to call a special legislative election, passage of enabling acts, and the death of President Hindenberg, Hitler was able to become President.  Hitler combined the offices of chancellor and president and became "der Fuhrer."      Return to main page
