Directly translated from Hindi, the word chakra means wheel of spinning energy, and so the 7 major chakras are major energy centers of our bodies. There are dozens of minor chakras, but the major chakras are located within the body, aligning vertically along the front of the vertebral column and correlating to major nerve ganglia in each region.

When the chakras are balanced, as through meditation or crystal-balancing techniques, the Kundalini serpent of energy and awareness rises from the root chakra and releases its energy through all chakras, ultimately connecting us with the Supreme Being. When the chakras are not balanced, creativity, spirituality, and life energy (chi or qi) cannot flow freely, leading to poor emotional and physical health.

Below is a brief introduction to each of the 7 major chakras and links to chakra-specific meditations and crystal-balancing techniques.

Root Chakra:
The Root Chakra (called Muladhara in Sanskrit) is located at the base of the spine and is associated with the color red. This is the chakra of self-preservation and earthly grounding and is the center of basic life energy. Stability, grounding, physical health, prosperity, and trust are all goals of the root chakra and can be brought about by proper balance.

Sacral Chakra:
The Sacral Chakra, also called the Sexual Chakra, (Svadhisthana in Sanskrit) is located from the base of the spine to the navel, including the abdomen, genitalia, lower back, and hips. This chakra is associated with the color orange and is the chakra of self-gratification and emotional identity. Its central issues are sexuality, emotions, and desire. Proper balance of this chakra can bring about grace, pleasure, healthy sexuality, and healthy emotions.

Solar Plexus Chakra:
The Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura in Sanskrit) is located in the solar plexus area slightly above the navel and is associated with the color yellow. This is the chakra of self-definition and concerns itself with personal power and will. Balancing the Solar Plexus Chakra can bring about vitality, spontaneity, strength of will, purpose, and self-esteem.

Heart Chakra:
The Heart Chakra (Anahata in Sanskrit) is located in and around the heart and is associated with the color green. This is the chakra of self-acceptance, love, and relationships. It is the integrator of opposites in the psyche: mind and body, make and female, persona and shadow, ego and unity. When the Heart Chakra is balanced, it lets us love deeply, feel compassion, and have a deep sense of peace.

Throat Chakra:
The Throat Chakra (Visshudha in Sanskrit) is located in the throat and is associated with the color blue. This is the chakra of self-expression, communication, creativity, and judgement. Balancing the Throat Chakra brings about clear communication, creativity, and resonance.

Brow Chakra:
The Brow Chakra (Ajna in Sanskrit) is located in the center of the forehead and is associated with the color indigo. This chakra is also referred to as the Third Eye because it houses our inner vision--inner dreams, clairvoyant gifts, wisdom, and perception. This is the chakra of self-reflection, and its balance brings psychic perception, accurate interpretation, imagination, and clear seeing.

Crown Chakra:
The Crown Chakra (Sahasrara in Sanskrit) is located at the top of the head and the cerebral cortex. This is the chakra of Divine Purpose and self-knowledge. It relates consciousness as pure awareness and forms our connection to the greater world beyond ourselves, our connection to the Supreme Being. Balance of the Crown Chakra brings us knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. When fully developed, this chakra also gives us a greater, more meaningful spiritual connection and an undeniable feeling of bliss.

Higher Realms This website is awesome--it has a good chakra page where you can find more info on each chakra and it gives tips on how to balance your chakras using crystals and meditation. It also has a page explaining how to do astral projection (which involves meditation).
