UNITY AMONG BRETHREN

Unity is an admired and needed characteristic in every area of life. The
Psalmist David exclaimed, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity" (Psalm 133:1). Indeed, unity among brethren makes true fellowship possible. It blesses our lives in many, many ways.

For example, unity among brethren helps to make possible an atmosphere of encouragement. Life can be tough, and frustrations and discouragements can seem overwhelming. But the support and encouragement we receive from faithful brethren eases our burdens and cares. As we are exhorted, "Let brotherly love continue" (Hebrews 13:1). True unity can exist as we demonstrate our love and concern toward each other. How wonderful and even thrilling it is to know that we have this source of encouragement available to us.

But also, unity among brethren is an important key to advancing the work of the Lord. In Romans 12 and First Corinthians 12 the apostle Paul compares the church (the body of Christ) to the functioning of the human body. As the various parts of the body must work in cooperation with one another in order for the body to properly function, so it is that individual Christians must work together in the work of the church. Indeed, unity among brethren is always a tremendous boost to the work of the Lord.

Let us make sure that we are abiding in the truth (John 8:31 & 32), and as we are unified, we will be exceedingly blessed.
