Flag of In God We Trust

SOME THOUGHTS ON PATRIOTISM

99999 The tragic events of last month have brought about among Americans a tremendous sense of patriotism. I have never seen more flags flown and sentiments of patriotism openly expressed. There is among Americans an increased spirit of unity.

99999 As Christians, we should be thankful to be Americans. Our nation was founded upon the principles of liberty and justice. We are free to come together as often as we desire to worship. We never have to wonder if governmental authorities are going to interrupt our services, ordering us to immediately cease meeting. We are free to openly teach others the Lord's plan of salvation.

99999 Indeed, it is our fervent prayer that these conditions will always exist. In so many ways across the years, God has abundantly blessed America. Though our nation is not perfect, it remains the greatest nation on earth.

99999 This past month we have been vividly reminded that there are threats in our nation. There is a sense of fear and apprehension that did not exist one month ago. But from the shock of terror, the citizens of our nation can rise up a renewed people. America can be stronger than ever!

99999 As children of God, let's be reminded that our first citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). But there is still the responsibility that we owe to our nation. For example, the apostle Paul emphasized our responsibility to pray for those in authority, "Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence" (I Timothy 2:1 & 2).

99999 History records that following World War II the Lord's church grew rapidly in number. Hopefully, the recent events will cause more people to think soberly and seriously of their soul's deep need of salvation.

99999 Beloved, with the simple truth of the gospel, we can provide the hope, comfort, and strength that many people are seeking. Pure and pristine New Testament Christianity is the answer for these times, and all times!
