Image Enhancement, Interpretation and Plotting

Introduction

In this assignment we interested in portion of the west of the island of the island of Java in Indonesia that we can called this is study are. And the purpose of this assignment is to introduce a new user to image enhancement using ER Mapper. Topics to be covered in this assignment include: image enhancement, histogram manipulation, land-cover interpre tation and plotting. Raw image often have low contrast and the detection of individual features may be difficult which thereby makes it necessary to enhance an image for displaying various land cover types.

Objective

  1. Overall enhancement Using histogram of the entire TM image provided obtain an enhancement that clearly distinguishes between features for the entire area. There is usually a fine line between the enhancement of one feature and the saturation of anther. Balance this trade off to obtain a satisfactory overall image. Use a composite of 3 different bands of your choice.
  1. Interpretation Examine the enhanced image to distinguish land cover types and features. This includes 1) Urban features, 2) geological features, 3) turbid water, 4) deep clear water, 5) smoke/haze, 6) agriculture, 7) natural vegetative cover, 8)wetland and any other feature of interest. Based on the discussion of spectral reflectance, choose appropriate band combinations for this. Examination of one band at a time will be useful here. Determine the band(s)that we fine give the best results for each feature.
  1. Specific Cover Type enhancement Based on the interpretation results, create a series of enhancements that emphasize some of the feature types on the interpretation table. Expect that there will be some degradation of the overall image in order to distigui9sh these features type. You are required to create enhanced images of the following features: 1) water and near shore features, 2.vegetation types, and3. Urban/villages/roads.
  1. Plotting experiment with plotting capabilities of ER Mapper. Prepare a plot layout or a set of plot layouts that display the overall enhancement and the feature type enhancements. As a minimum, the plot (s) must include: The enhancement type, scale, projection information, a little and subtitle describing the plot and location, and the author and year. There are various options within ER Mapper to enable the automation of most of these, which will be discussed in the labs.

Background information

Image enhancement can be defined as conversion of the image quality to a better and more understandable lever for feature extraction or image interpretation. In the enhancement techniques include gray scale conversion, histogram conversion, color composition color conversion between RGB and HIS, etc which are usually applied to the image output for image interpretation. And the interpretation it have had eight elements are mostly used in image interpretation; size, shape, shadow, tone, color, texture, pattern and associated relationship or context. And plotting it is plot layout that we would like to display the overall enhancement and the feature s type enhancement, which in this assignment we are not actually plotting the map compositions, we are just saving them to as file, because the paper is white.
