The Florida Panhandle, the Gulf and on to Lafayette Louisianna
We stopped for several nights at Destin, then on to Big Lagoon state park near Pensicola. We spent a night near Mobile and toured the U.S.S Alabama battleship. From there we spent a couple of nights along the Mississippi gulf coast at Buccaneer state park. Then it was on to Lafayette Louisianna for Mardi Gras!

bikes
We rode our bikes along the gulf from Buccaneer state park in Mississippi. We went about 3 miles to the little town of Waveland where we had lunch at a really good restuarant with a Cajun feel to the meals. I had an awsome shrimp and pasta meal. Yum!

Tabasco
couir de Mardi Gras
We drove on to Lafayette Louisianna where we camped at Maxie's campground in Broussard. We drove down to Avery Island, the home of Tabasco. We stocked up on Tabasco goodies in the country store. They have a great spicy Tabasco bloody mary mix!
We went to a Couir de Mardi Gras for children at Vermillionville, a reconstructed Cajun Village. The Couir de Mardi Gras is a traditional event in the rural communities around Lafayette. The participants go around and demand food to be used in a communal gumbo.
dancers
booty
There was a group of children from a local dance school that provided some dancing to go along with the event. They had lot's of feathers on their costumes to signify chickens, one of the things the participants in a Couir de Mardi Gras gather for the gumbo.
After the children went to the houses in the village and begged for food, they brought it back to the hall. These were 'simulated' goodies, but they had bowls of gumbo in the hall all made up.
