Mr Don Muharum officially started Silat National Perisai Diri Australia branch in 1979, in Brisbane.  Don had trained Silat PD in the Bandung region of West Java where he attained the level of Red Stripe. He then travelled to Australia to start a branch of Silat PD outside of Indonesia.  His dedication is clearly demonstrated in his willingness to leave his family and his country to follow his dream.

On arriving in Australia, Don took various jobs while instructing in the new martial art in Australia and commenced to build the framework of the Australian branch. His teaching methods and knowledge were such that he inspired many people to follow Silat PD and the Australian branch grew from there.

At the end of 1985 the first group trip from the Australian branch to Indonesia was organised and this was followed by another trip in 1986. These two trips established the acceptance of the Australian branch by Indonesia and paved the way for the future of Silat PD Australia, as we know it today. The close ties of friendship formed have been strengthened over the years by many other trips, both from Australia to Indonesia and by visits of representatives of Silat National PD Indonesia to Australia.

From its beginnings in Brisbane, the club has grown with branches around Australia. There is a Silat PD branch established in the cities of : Brisbane, Townsville, Gympie, Yandina, Adelaide, Canberra and Puckapunyal.  Many people have passed through our doors and the thanks of the present members go to those members who by their efforts and support have gone to create the basis that has made the club the success it is today.
