This project started to germinate after I read a few intriguing posts by Gerie Bledsoe on Steve's Chevy II and Nova Q&A Page.

Gerie placed 4th in the 2000 Mexican La Carrera Vintage Car Road Race driving a 1964 Chevy II with a mild 283 and a Saginaw 4 speed. He would have placed higher if he hadn't run out of fuel due to a lost gas cap! He planned on using a 283 again, but I suggested he use the largest displacement the rules allow. A 327 was the biggest OEM engine available in 1965. I happened to have one partially finished and agreed to loan it to him for the 2001 race.

The race is covers about 1800 miles of Mexican roads and goes from sea level to around 9,000 feet! The altitude change and 2 barrel carb rule will make getting enough air difficult. Initial calculations show 375-395 hp at sea level drops to about 275 hp at 8,000 feet. Volumetric Efficiency (VE) will need to be maximized to minimize torque loss. Conversely, an engine tuned to run at high altitude is more likely to detonate at sea level. A MSD ignition box with driver adjustable timing control will help avoid this problem.

Historic "C" class cars have to be 1965 or older. Engines are limited to stock displacement V-8's. No aluminum heads allowed. Other than the internal moving and rotating parts, the rules place restrictions on using modern technology. Some "Vintage" speed parts will be utilized. Power will be sent through a light weight flywheel. A new close ratio M-21 Muncie transmission will replace the Saginaw unit and the car has a 9" Ford rear axle.
