CAPTAIN’S NOTES

Diana Volpini-Allen, Captain

Welcome to the 2009 golfing season of Poplar Creek Women’s Golf Club.  We have a lot of exciting things planned for this year.  Read your calendar for some of our new games we will be playing.

The new pro and golf shop manager, Dana Banke, has notified us that all our members will now receive a 10% discount off all purchases (other than golf) in the pro shop.  So start spending those $$!

Dana has also offered to do some free clinics for us.  The first of these is scheduled for March 25.  The clinic will start at 8:15AM.  Our tee times will follow at 9:30AM.  Sign ups for both the clinic and our tee times will be handled in our sign up book or by contacting Judy Early.  You can sign up for one without doing the other.  For questions on this call Judy Early or me.

We are planning a Rally for the Cure this year.  The tournament will be held at our September 23rd Shotgun (7:30AM), General Meeting & luncheon day.  For a nominal fee, you will be entered in the closest pin contest to win a special prize.  You will also receive a choice of magazine subscriptions and some other prizes.  More information will be forthcoming.

Just another reminder about canceling tee times:  It is very important that you try and cancel before the Tuesday 5:00PM deadline.  Unless you have an emergency, you will be considered a no-show and will be fined if you don’t.  We all need to treat each other with respect and courtesy.  Canceling at the last minute without cause may be seen as uncaring about the work our members do to make golf fun and easy for the rest.

The Board Members have written some articles about who they are and what they do for the club.  Reading them might make you think you would like to have the same fun they are having.  We are always looking for new faces for the board.  If you want to learn more about tournaments, scoring, handicapping, etc., just contact one of us.

MEET YOUR BOARD!

Co-Captain: Judy Early

Thanks to the club for allowing me the opportunity to be of service as your Co-Captain.  ASAP I hope to be moving to the Oakmont adult community (Santa Rosa), with two golf courses.  This last year has been a learning opportunity for me, and I have certainly enjoyed interacting with all of you.  I will be joining the PWGA and plan to see some of you at the special tournaments, open days, etc.

A couple of reminders to make setting up the tee times easier….

   1. Please sign up to play PRIOR to Friday’s preliminary tee time email.

   2. Cancellations are frowned on…I have to “juggle” all the tee times above your

       cancelled time…especially on Class Day.

   3. Read your emails…don’t just let your “significant other” delete them because

they know you are not playing.

   4. Call both persons in charge of tee times (Ilene Turtletaub & me)…you don’t know

       who has the official “book”.

If you need to change your “duty” assignment, contact the current Co-Captain.

Secretary: Mary Lou Hulsey

Secretary since 2004, Mary Lou lists her duties as taking and publishing minutes at all Board and General Meetings for the club.  She also handles any other necessary correspondence upon request.

Treasurer: Diane Key

I am the treasurer for our golf club and one of the “Big Wigs”.  I have been keeping track of our financial expenditures and income for the past 3 years.  It has been rewarding (not only monetarily!) by bringing me into closer contact with some of the club members and knowing that I am performing a service that is necessary to Poplar Creek Women GC’s continuing existence.  After 3 years, though, I feel that another member should share the good time.  Duties are few – writing checks as needed, depositing monies, etc.  The most time consuming duty is keeping track of membership renewals and updating the spreadsheets for same.  I know that many of you will jump at this chance to be on the Board of Directors.

Weekly Tournament Chairpersons: Perla Schmidt and Bonnie Barr

I’m Perla, and with Bonnie, share the duties of the weekly tournaments.  We assist and help the scorer with the weekly sweeps.  Calculations are made to determine the winners and the award to be distributed to each. $2.00 of the sweeps goes to the pro shop – game winners receive credit at the shop.  $.50 goes to Closest to Pin and Chip-ins – winners receive cash in the cash box.  Birdies are awarded at the December awards luncheon.

Occasionally there is a need to finish the work at home, so winnings may not appear in player’s pro shop account until the next week.  Results of the game are announced to members via email, and also posted on the cabinet door.

I prepare the monthly scoring and check-in sheets with the updated handicaps.  I plan to be away a few times this year, and would like help with this.  If you can help, please see me and I will show you how to do it.

Special Tournaments: Ilene Turtletaub

Our club has 5 special tournaments which run simultaneously with our weekly play games.  The cost to enter is $5.00, and it is supplemented by our treasury funds.  The highlight is our Club Championship (3 games) tournament.

I am now taking sign-ups for our first special tournament - the Winter ECC.  It runs from March 4 through April 22.  The cost is $5.00, and you don’t have to play all of the dates.  You may play one or all eight.  The more times you play the more chances you have of improving your score and winning.  See you all on Wednesday.  Thanks.

Handicaps: Peggy Nahinu

The Handicap Chair is responsible for the compliance with the USGA Handicap System, including peer review.  This involves monitoring the play cards from the weekly tournaments, and dealing with any issues re handicaps.  If you have any problems or questions about handicapping, just email me.

Rules:  Margaret Gouveia and Marianne Severe

For any questions that may arise during play, play your ball as you think correct and play a second ball if in doubt.  Ask one of us for the final decision as to which ball’s score should be used for your game.  In our absence, refer the question to the tournament chairman.  We will answer any rules questions you may have, and if necessary, research our references to find the answer.

Awards: Brenda Sell

My duties are to have the Captain and Club Championship plaques presently displayed in the Ladies Room engraved each year, and to provide & engrave the “Most Improved” prize.  I hope to add a Championship prize to be taken home, budget permitting.  If anyone has a clever idea or resource for unique engravable prize items, please email me ([email protected]).  This position will not be vacated at the foreseeable future as I enjoy serving our club in this small fashion.

Hospitality & Sunshine:  Phoebe Choy

I would appreciate knowing whenever anyone is ill or has sad news so I can send them a card.

PWGA Rep:  Helen Hartshorn

I have been your PWGA representative for several years.  As a member of Poplar Creek, you are also a member of the Pacific Women’s Golf Assoc.  PWGA supports women amateur golfers on the public courses in Northern California, supports several benevolent projects, and provides educational, competitive, and social opportunities for their members.  PWGA also provides your handicap through GHIN service.

The 2009 PWGA handbooks are now available.  Pick yours up on Wednesdays at the check-in table at Poplar Creek.

If you belong to more than one PWGA club, you may receive a rebate of $16 for each additional PWGA club for which you are a member.  Applications are accepted between March 1st and September 30th and application forms are available online or the last page in your PWGA handbook.

Throughout the year I will be letting you know about San Jose Area playdays and PWGA major tournaments and how to sign up for them.  The schedules for both are also listed in your Poplar Creek yearbook.  Here are the first events:

1st Play day – Monday, March 30th at Deep Cliff GC, Cupertino

     1st Major PWGA – May 5 & 6 – Seniors/Super Seniors at Chuck Corica GC, Alameda

Did you know that PWGA members are eligible for a discount on Enterprise car rentals?  You can book online at www.enterprise.com.  Just use the corporate code “PAC” and the discount code “30C3146”.

PWGA is sponsoring a golf rules seminar on Thursday, April 16 from 8:30am to 1:30pm at Wildhorse GC in Davis for $18 per person.  The signup deadline is April 4th.  More details online at www.golfpwga.org.

This year, PWGA members may also join NCGA for an additional $20.  Join online at www.golfpwga.org.

Membership:  Alice Littlepage

I have been membership chairperson for the past several years.  In the past, we had so many members that we had to turn some away, but now our membership is down to 76 members.  We need more members to keep our group active.  Please try to get your golfing friends to join our group.  If they have established handicaps, they only have to play one game with the club (and score 120 or better) to qualify.  If they do not have handicaps, we can get them one after they play 5 games with the group (and average 120 or less).  I’m hoping we can get at least a dozen more members this year.  Thanks!

Newsletter:  Molly Pong

Club newsletters are published twice a year or when the Board sees fit to do so.  Lately we have started to send them out via e-mail for quick dissemination and to save expense.  Hopefully this has met with everyone’s approval.  Your comments are welcome!

I have been maintaining a free website for the club – it’s a bare bones type and since it’s free, there are ads alongside it.  Nevertheless, we are linked to Poplar Creek Golf Club’s website, and it may be a source for prospective new members. Have you checked it out?

Anyone with computer skills is urged take this over and make improvements!
