| Aspiration Statement Chantel A. Sloan Bulgaria June 18, 2001 *Expectations of Peace Corps Service: I have many expectations of my Peace Corps service, both for myself and for those whom I will serve in Bulgaria. First of all, I expect the people who I come into contact with in Bulgaria to be blessed and touched by my servitude, my selfless perseverance, and my character. I hope to be remembered after I leave Bulgaria for the many ventures I partook of as a Peace Corps volunteer. Like anyone who is truly committed to the Peace Corps, my priority and my key motivation in joining the Peace Corps is to give of myself and my talents and abilities to make a difference in the lives of others. In regards to what I expect for myself, I expect to come out of the Peace Corps a different person; I expect to return a more humble and generous person with a heart burning to serve others even more than it already is. I also hope to come out of the Peace Corps more independent and more in control of all of my decisions, ready to conquer the real world after having gone from the safety of home to the security of college thus far. In addition, I certainly expect to strengthen my character as I make many lasting memories. And, as I am strengthened, Bulgaria will also be strengthened! *Strategies for Adapting to a New Culture: To adapt to my new culture, I plan on being open to the culture and learning all that I possibly can about it. I plan on throwing myself wholeheartedly into language and culture acquisition and then using my new knowledge to listen, talk to, and relate with all those who I am serving. As they say, When in Bulgaria, do like the Bulgarians! I will adapt to the culture by being receptive to it and, though I will maintain my American cultural identity, I will make the Bulgarian culture an intricate part of my life for two years. The key to adapting to any culture is learning the language in order to communicate and then observing and mimicking cultural patterns and methods. Finally, as a Christian, I will adapt to my new culture through prayer, Bible reading, and seeking Gods guidance . I'll rely on God's direction through all acomplishments! *Personal Goals: I hope to use this experience to become more humble and generous, constantly thinking of others before I even begin to think about myself; I hope to become more independent; I hope to make memories that I can look back at fondly for years to come. Through this experience, I want to become a better, more giving person. *Professional Goals: I hope to be an adequate English teacher, whom children admire and learn from; I hope to use my talents, abilities, and creativity in teaching effectively; I hope to successfully work with parents and colleagues; I hope to learn the Bulgarian language and immerse myself into the culture; I hope to make a difference in the lives of many Bulgarians as I effectively teach them English and shine forth God's light in their lives! |
