This is part of the market in Bertoua, the capital of the East Province. I lived in Bertoua and taught at the Lycee Bilingue de Bertoua. Anicet and I went to the market at least once a week to grocery shop--usually more than once a week, as we didn't have a refrigerator, so we needed to buy our food fresh. The market was a very busy place, but it was fun to shop there. |

Apollo was my cat while I was in Bertoua. He was born in the roof of my house and I took him in. He loved to eat Chili Cheese Fritos. Unfortunately he died in Cameroon. I miss him very much. |

The southern part of the East Province is all jungle. We spent 4 days in the jungle with tour guides from a World Wildlife Fund-sponsored camp called Lobeke. The structure on stilts in the picture is called a "mirador." That's where we slept while we were there. The river in front is a watering place for the animals. We also swam in it. We saw quite a few wild animals on our treks through the forest. It was tough, and my hiking boots were ruined, but we made it through. |
