| Student Osteopathic Research Association (SORA) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The need for research is vital for osteopathy and PCSOM. We have a great faculty and teaching hospital that continue to improve. Now we plan to complete the third leg of a great medical institution by promoting high quality research at PCSOM. There are numerous local physicians and faculty that are interested, available, and willing to help and advise medical students in their pursuit of medical and epidemiologic research. This provides students with an opportunity to publish which will certainly assist in residency program placement. The primary goal of SORA at PCSOM is to creat a forum to connect students to faculty and physicians for the purpose of research. The research goals that include all students, even those not directly involved in research are: 1) To promote research at PCSOM 2) To serve as a research information source for students and faculty 3) To provide education about recent research involving common disease states. SORA Contacts are: Randy Durbin Kelly Newton Cade Cinnamond Susun Kim |

| American College Of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This organization was chartered first in the state of California in 1950. Today, ACOFP is the largest College within the AOA organization. ACOFP makes up the biggest financial and political contributor to Osteopathic Medicine in the U.S. The state of Kentucky now has nearly 400 members. Since PCSOM opened its doors in 1997, we have continuously had 100% student membership in our chapter. The school and the national organization cover all cost of membership to the student. To be a member, by no means do you have to decide on Family Practice residency at this point in your training; nor must you have an interest in primary care. ACOFP, however, depends on your membership to strengthen and promote osteopathic medicine's cause throughout the country in policy making, reform, and competency withing its ranks. ACOFP workd to gain our profession the recognition it deserves, and argue for equality issues that you will be faced with in your career. The benefits of being a member include free registration to attend the national ACOFP Convention, including free seminars, breakfasts, and lunches. This year the convention will be held in Tampa, FL (usually during Spring Break). Attendance to the convention is encouraged in order to become familiar with Osteopathic medicine, learn about new advances and issues, network with the people you will be working with, and also gives you the forum to voice your concerns about the organization's future. This, along with numerous student scholarships, the Strongest Link residency program, and a free ACOFP t-shirt, mug and other cool stuff, make it worth the free registration! |

| The Christian Medical Society is a group of nearly 8,000 Christian physicians, dentist and medical and dental students committed to living out our faith through our professions both in the U.S. and around the world. We understand the unique pressures that medicine brings to families and individuals. As a society, we bring resources to help meet those pressures. We are dedicated to making the most of the exceptional opportunities for ministry afforded by medicine, from the whole person health care to missions around the world. And we have not forgotten the pressures we face in medical school. We have the only extensive ministry of any Christian organization in the nation to medical students, strengthening them during their demanding years of training, and preparing them for future years of practice and service. |

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The PCSOM Emergency Medicine Club offers an arena for those interested in emergency medicine to talk about and share the latest news and information about what is going on in the field of emergency medicine. It offers opportunities to discuss future possible intern and resident positions as well as a number of possiblities to be able to get involved in the community and academic affairs. | Student Osteopathic Surgical Association (SOSA) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Student Osteopathic Surgical Association (SOSA), in affiliation with American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS), was conceived by Marty Jenter of Iowa in 1988. In 1989, at the National Convention of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, SOSA was overwhelmingly accepted. Our primary purpose is to provide interested students with first hand experience in the area of surgery. This year, and in the years to come, we will be gearing the organization toward surgical procedures and techniques performed not only in the hospital setting, but in the primary care outpatient setting as well. While some SOSA members are considering surgery as a career choice, it is by no means a prerequisite to become a part of our organization. SInce all must eventually do a surgical rotation in their clinical years, all can benefit from becoming a member. SOSA hosts a variety of speakers on various topics including how to obtain residencies and life as a surgeon, while holding several hands-on workshops including a suture and surgical knot tying clincic, a scrub clinic, surgical/laparoscopic videos, an surgical anatomy reviews.
