Synthetic progestins for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera), norethindrone (Aygestin), and progesterone (Progestasert) are man-made (synthetic) forms of the hormone progesterone. They reduce male hormone (testosterone) and estrogen levels, which helps regulate the menstrual cycle. Excess hair growth (hirsutism) is also reduced in women with this symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
These synthetic progestins can be taken in pill form or as an injection. Side effects include headaches, fluid retention, and mood changes. |
