John L. Hurt, Jr.
April 23, 1887 - Sept. 1, 1964
In 1923, John L. Hurt, Jr inherited from his uncle, Major John L. Hurt, all of his land holdings and his dream to see a town born. At that time the community of "Hurt" was nothing more than a sprinkling of houses, a general store, and Major Hurt's office. Mr. Hurt tackled the goal of making the community into a town with unbridled optimism and unhindered determination. In 1948, he laid out the town's streets and building lots and proceeded to encourage people to settle the area. He sold lots for as little as $200 and allowed the debt to be paid in small amounts. In addition to selling building lots, Hurt also donated a great deal of land to causes he deemed worthy. Among his contributions were land for Hurt Elementary School, New Prospect Baptist Church, Hurt United Methodist Church and St. Victoria Catholic Church.
