Ship for South East Asian Youth Program
Background Ship for South East Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP) was initiated under an agreement among five earliest ASEAN countries and Japan on January 1974. Brunei Darussalam joined this program in 1985 after joining ASEAN beforehand in 1984. Vietnam later participated in 1996 after having concluded its enrollment to ASEAN in 1995. In 1998, Laos and Myanmar followed SSEAYP’s trace only before Cambodia wrapped today’s SSEAYP participant in 2000.
Purpose It is clear to say that the program’s goals are to strengthen the network and mutual understanding among south East Asian and Japanese youth, to expand the international outlook, and to enhance the motivation and international cooperation through diverse activities during the program.
Funding SSEAYP is fully endowed by the government of Japan in return of active participation and cooperation from the ASEAN countries. In Indonesia, this program is delivered by the Deputy of Leadership Development in State Ministry of Youth and Sport
Activities Generally the activities are divided into two, on board activities and country program. The description below is to explain only some among many activities during the entire program.
On Board Activities •Discussion: Participating youth are divided into discussion theme where they are most interested in, and they could enhance their knowledge by sharing the information among participants from other countries. •Solidarity Group Activities: Instead of spending time during the program with the friends from the same country, the youth are divided into groups whose members are from different countries. They will spend the time during the cruise by mingling among nations. •Club Activities: Each country’s representatives are given a chance to share their cultural knowledge by teaching and exhibiting it in front of the other participants. This will open our horizon for something that we would have never thought exist. •Cultural Performance and Exhibition: Each country is granted one night to perform and show all their cultural richness in the biggest hall specially designed for stage performance on board. Although most participants are not professional performer, they will have endured a training in each home country before the departure.
Country Programs •Welcome Ceremony •Reception Dinner on Board the Ship •Courtesy Calls, A visit to the government entity or executive’s office, such as President’s office or Emperor’s castle. •Institutional Visit, Participating youth will be divided into different groups accordingly and visit places of interests, such as TV studio, universities, tourism attraction, etc. •Interaction with Local People-Youth •Homestays •Parties on Board, and Open ship •Farewell and Send Off Ceremony •All Activities permitted by Reception Committee /Respective Governments
