To make one block: 
You will need two fabrics -
one dark to medium value and one medium to light vlaue
                  Cut 5 squares measuring  4 3/4" from the darker fabric
                       
Cut 4 squares measuring 4 3/4" from the lighter of the fabrics
Arrange your blocks alternating to "see" three rows


With RST* stitch A to B, open and  press seam *.

Also with RST, stitch C to B to form row 1.

Continue with squares D & E and then F for row 2.

And finally squares G & H with I for row 3.

Now with RST stitch Row 1  to Row 2 as shown being careful to match at perpendecular seams for matching corners.**.

With RST stitch Row 3 to Row 2 in the same way.

** When pressing each row in STEP 2, press the seam towards the darker fabric square.  This will help you when sewing rows together in STEP 3.  When laying rows RST, you will be able to "lock" the corners of the squares together by butting the seams made in step 2 together.  The seams should not be overlapping and causing a mis-stitch and corner mishap.
All seams are scant 1/4" unless otherwise specified.   Please read through the instructions prior to starting any pattern.
