STEP 3
RAIL FENCE BLOCK
12.5" unfinished
Tip:  Using a cutting board, rotary cutter and a marked plastic ruler will help in accurate measured strips.

You will need four fabric color values:
                  Dark - fabric A
                  Medium - fabric B
                  Light - fabric C
                  Very Light - fabric D

Cut from each fabric:  ONE 2" x 26 1/2" strip
All seams are scant 1/4" unless otherwise specified.   Please read through the instructions prior to starting any pattern.

C
D
Putting RST, sew fabric A to fabric B on the 26 1/2" length closely watching that the edges are flush.

Open to expose right sides now and place fabric C right side to fabric B and stitch as with last seam.

Open to expose joined strips and stitch fabric D to fabric C with, of course, RST.

You should now have one piece made with the four strips ranging in color values from dark to very light.
Measure and cut this stripped piece into four equal lengths -
     First cut in half
(approx. 13 1/4") and then in half once more for 4 (approx. 6 7/8") blocks.
                     These will be blocks 1, 2 , 3, and 4.

On the table in front of you, place blocks 1 and 4 with strips horizontally and blocks 2 and 3 with the strips vertically.

Place now in positions for sewing -
(diagram a)  Blocks 1 & 2 will be Row 1 and blocks 3 & 4 will be Row 2

Row 1
Row 2
With RST, place blocks 1 and 2 together and stitch dark fabric of block 2 to block 1.  (Best done with block 1 on top so you can make sure all the seams from stripping go towards the darker fabric)

Again with blocks 3 & 4 and RST, stitch very light fabric of Block 3 to block 4.  (Watch that your seams from stripping again all go towards the darker fabric)
With both pieces (Rows 1 & 2) RST, stitch together making the center seam of block.  You should be looking at a rough 12 1/2" square block that will need a little trimming.
TO TRIM:  Make sure you trim from EACH side of the block equally so you do not off-center the blocks center.  Press seams again.

*RST = RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER
Right sides refers to the better print side of the fabric.  Gingham is the only cotton fabric that has
TWO right sides that are identical.  HomeSpun has two-right sides with sides that have reverse colors.
