Block of the Month Pattern
BLOCK- Courthouse Steps
For an 12.5" unfinshed block

Cut:  2    2" strips of medium / dark fabric  WOF*
        2    2" strips of light / lighter fabric     WOF
        1    3 1/2" fussy cut* square or choice fabric

Step 2
With right sides together
(RST) sew 1 light to the top and bottom of the center square cutting to length as you go.
Press seams to the darker fabric.

Step 3
With RST stitch a strip of the darker fabric to each side of the pieced row and cut to length.   Press  seams  
Step 4 &  6 &  8
With
RST stitch light strips to the top and bottom of the pieced block and cut to length.  Press seams.
Step 5 & 7
With RST stitch a strip of the darker fabric to each side of the pieced row and cut to length.  Press Seams.

*FUSSY CUT- A cut of fabric that singles out a particular print for a highlight square.  A square or rectangle of fabric where a print (character, flower, name, etc) is chosen and the quilter is very FUSSY CUTting the size needed capturing the print in the square to be used.

* WOW - Width of fabric (42-44" etc)  .  Generally cut from salvage to salvage unless otherwise specified in directions. 
there will be left-overs of the strips but it easier to NOT cut to size until after pieced

Press all seams and center the block on your cutting board for squaring up.  Remember to trim away from all sides equally so you will not create uneven strips in the outside round of "courthouse steps".
