April
Block of the Month Pattern
BLOCK- Mosaic (Broken Dishes) using HSTs  (Half-Square Triangles)
For an 12.5" unfinshed block

Cut:  2   7" squares of medium / dark fabric
2   7" squares of light / lighter fabric

On the wrong side of the light fabric, draw a line diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner with a pencil.

This will be your cutting line LATER
Lay the lighter squares right sides together with the dark squares.

Measure (and draw, if needed) scant 1/4" from the marker cutting  line and stitch the light to the dark using a 1/4" seam allowance.  Turn fabric and stitch scant 1/4" from marked line on other side.  Do this for the other set of squares.
Chain stitching works well with this procedure.

Cut each stitched square on cutting line. Finger press the seams flat on the right side of the seam and press seams to the dark fabric side.  You should now have 4 HSTs (Half Square Triangles).

STEP 3

With all seams pressed toward the darker fabric, arrange these 4 HSTs into design.
Fold HST 1 over onto 2 - right sides together and stitch center seam.  Repeat this step with HSTs 3 & 4.

Open each two-block and press seams toward the dark fabric side.

STEP 5
With each two-block sewn together and pressed, lay block 1-2 on top of block 3-4 with right sides together.  Make sure the design, when sewn is going to be what you want by seeing past the stitching and looking at how it will look when stitched.
When laid right sides together, HST 1 should be covered by HST3 and HST 2 covered by HST 4.  Stitch middle seam joining 1-2 and 3-4 in one block.

Once the skill of making HSTs is mastered..... many arrangements and designs are available to make with a simple arranging of the HSTs.
The possibilities are endless!!!
