HOLIDAYS - VIETNAM/CAMBODIA Cont..
About this same time we met Nicholas who just about had his new American parents organised to take him back to USA where they will all live a wonderful life.
Kingdom of Cambodia
The famous ANGKOR Wat (left) where we spent a huge amount of time. This grand temple complex was rescued from the jungle in the 1800s by the French. The history of this area goes back a thousand years and it is still amazingly preserved. Over a few days we wandered around Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat, saw the Elephant Terrace and were totally overwhelmed by the engineering created by these people so long ago. If you are anywhere in the area the temples around ANGKOR is a must see.
The kids in Cambodia are incredibly cute (as we found in Vietnam) and very approachable. The markets (below) and the street vendors were in abundence (but do I really look like someone who would buy fabric???).
Now this was an eye opener. here we were at the Cu Chi Tunnels just outside Saigon and they tell me there is a tunnel entrance here. Now you see it .. now you don't!! No wonder we had trouble finding the north vietcong in the war. ...Now try getting a westerner back in there!!!
After we returned home we thought about the lovely kids in Cambodia and the poverty they live in . We found that just a few days pay each year can make a world of difference to these kids and their entire village so we spoke to World Vision here in Australia and arranged to make a donation to help. This is Phorn Phart the newest member of our extended family. We are now planning for a return trip to Cambodia sometime in the future to meet him and his family.
