My NC Vacation Spot

Location and Access

My favorite vacation spot in North Carolina is Topsail Island. There are three towns on the 26 mile long barrier island, North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach. Two bridges allow access to the island, a swing bridge in Surf City and a high-rise bridge that connects Sneads Ferry to North Topsail Beach. Topsail Island is located 30 minutes from Wilmington.

Things you will need for the trip:

  1. Map
  2. Gas money
  3. Money for a room or house

History

Topsail Island was used in the 1700's by pirates who hid their ships waiting for merchants that had to pass by the Carolina coast. Only the topsails of the pirate ships could be seen over the sand dunes that's where Topsail gets its name. Topsail is full of beautiful scenery. Topsail is a small island with a big history, all the way from the early Native Americans and explorers in the 1500s to pirates, the Civil War Era, all the way down to World War II with Operation Bumblebee. This history can be found in the museums located on Channel Boulevard in Topsail Beach.
