OUR GREAT ESCAPE -- 2004
See hundreds (maybe thousands) of scenic pics of our great escape. Arranged by the week of our travels.
Peter's & Cindy's 3-month, 27000+km, "escape" down Route 66, up the west coast and home along the TransCanada Highway.
South of Chicago we pick up Route 66, "the Mother Road" and travel to Tumacacori, New Mexico with lots of stops along the way. Then it is south to Carlsbad Caverns, west to El Paso, Texas, further west across the bottom of New Mexico into south-east Arizona. Tombstone, Fort Bowie, etc. are followed with a walk into Nogales, Mexico. Then it's up to Tucson, Phoenix, Sedona, Jerome, Cottonwood, and the Oak Creek Canyon. From Flagstaff we head back east on Route 66 with stops in Twin Arrows, Two Guns, Meteor City, and Winslow, where one has to "stand on the corner". We take a tour through the Petrified Forest & Painted Desert and turn back before we get to the New Mexico border. Then it is up to the Grand Canyon, back down to Route 66, west until we turn north to Hoover Dam and Las Vegas. After Death Valley, we pick up the interstate west to Route 66 again. Then it is west and south to Joshua Tree National Park near Palm Springs...back north to L.A. to Route 66 again and west to the Santa Monica Pier. Disneyland, Hollywood, etc.,along the beaches and up the coast from Malibu all the way to the western tip of Washington. Again lots of stops throughout.
Sailing off Vancouver Island, ferry to Vancouver, up to Whistler, back to North Vancouver, up the Okanagan Valley and east on the TransCanada to Alberta. Up the Icefield parkway to Jasper and then back south to Lake Louise, east to Banff and all the way east to Sudbury. Then it was south to visit the kids and grandchildren west of Toronto and home to Montreal.
Lots of journal notes and photos!
