The Business of the Blues

After the Blues became ingrained in the minds of the enslaved, it emerged through many more voices and approaches. From slaves to sharecroppers the Blues became a way of life for the unfortunate. If they had nothing else, they had the Blues.

While the newly freed slaves turned into sharecroppers, the Blues played to more people. It also took more forms. Jazz also emerged onto the scene. The educated musicians who developed jazz were the first to read music. Blues artists remained as the uneducated who flirted with original compositions by chance.

Blues as a business emerged next. Women came upon the Blues scene. Next. the actual recording of the Blues greats were put down for replay and replay. The emergence of Blues into the music business was born.

When the record player was invented and the primitive recording methods were introduced, the Blues went from simply a singing tradition to a business. A business where making money was possible. There now was a way to preserve the music of the slaves and sharecroppers for all to hear. Not just the Mississippi Delta community. But the world.
