The Matrix: A Modern Jesus Story
Basic Story
Artificial intelligence created by humans became too powerful and created a computer program (The Matrix) based on our present day world. The AI uses hardwire cables connected to our minds in order to project this fake world into our thoughts. This serves two purposes: it immobilizes us and it allows the AI to use humans as energy to power itself. There is a small band of free humans who have congregated themselves in a city called Zion. Their goal is to destroy the Matrix and end the domination of the machines. However, they aren't powerful enough to do this. To compensate for their weakness, they find a man within the Matrix (Neo) who develops the ability to defeat the AI and begin to restore the control of Earth to the humans.
The Crew of the Nebuchadnezzar
Mark 3:14 - And He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him, and that He might send them out to preach.

The crew of the Nebuchadnezzar essentially represented the disciples of Jesus. They were loyal members of a "family" for Neo and they believed fully that he was "The One" who had come to save the humans from the machines.

Morpheus
Morpheus is a representation of John the Baptist. Neo's coming and his powers were proclaimed before they happened by Morpheus just as John the Baptist had done for Jesus. Also, just as Jesus was baptized by John, so was Neo "baptized" by Morpheus when he was given the red pill, thereby opening his eyes to reality and sending him down the path to realize his destiny.

The Prediction of Neo's Coming
Isaiah 7:14 - "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel."

Just as the prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of Jesus, the Oracle (a modern-day prophet) foretold the coming of Neo as the savior of the human race. Through her tactful prophesies to Morpheus and Trinity, the Oracle set in motion the finding of Neo and his realization of his destiny.

Tank and Dozer
Matthew 4:18-20 - ...He saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." And they immediately left the nets, and followed Him.

Like the three sets of brothers in Jesus' group of apostles, Tank and Dozer are in Neo's grop. They both specialize in decoding the Matrix, an important job at the time, just like Peter and Andrew specialized in fishing, which was an imporant job in Jesus' time.

Cypher
Mark 14:10- And Judas Iscariot, he that was one of the twelve, went away unto the chief priests, that he might deliver him unto them. And they, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him money.

Cypher, like Judas of Jesus' apostles, betrays Neo and his group to the Agents (the "chief priests") by telling them where Morpheus was hiding with the access codes to Zion. Cypher's "payment" is to be reinserted into the Matrix for a better life.

Sacrifice
Matthew 20:28 - "...just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

The Oracle tells Neo that in order to save Morpheus from the Agents, one of them would have to die. When Neo decides to go to save him anyway, he goes with the full knowledge that he will die. With this act, Neo is knowingly sacrificing himself to save humanity.*

*He is indirectly saving humanity by keeping the Zion access codes away from the Agents.

Death and Resurrection
Luke 24: 4-7 - ..."Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee. Saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again."

After saving Morpheus, while Neo is trying to escape the Agents and get out of the Matrix, he is shot and killed. Although three days don't pass before he is resurrected, the number three is represented through the instrument of his resurrection, Trinity. As Neo represents Jesus, Trinity fills in as the other two members of the Trinity. She acts as the Holy Spirit when through her kiss she gives Neo the "breath of life" and he awakens. She acts as God when she commands him, "Now, get up!" in order to complete the resurrection.

A Greater Power
Matthew 28:18 - And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."

Matthew 17:2 - And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.

After his resurrection, Neo's mastery of the Matrix is total, and the Agents are powerless against him. After he inhabits Agent Smith's body and causes the Agent to explode, Neo is represented as an glowing figure, just as Jesus was when he transfigured himself.

Ascension
Mark 16:19 - So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.

At the end of the movie, Neo hangs up a telephone after telling the Artificial Intelligence that this is the beginning of a world with no boundaries and no borders; then he "ascends" into the sky.
