HOW TO EVALUATE A WEB SITE

An Information Literacy Web Quest

Millions of people everyday get information from the World Wide Web. The web contains information on any topic you can think of, all of which is easily and quickly accesable. Yet how do we know this information that is being provided to us so easily is valid? How do we know it is not tainted or corrupted? The answer is we don't and in this age of computer technology and the internet it is easier than ever before to publish information that is either simply not true or biased.

As little as ten or twenty years ago mass communication and publication was difficult and somewhat expensive proposition. First you would need a lot of money to buy or rent the equipment necessary to distribute or broadcast your message; second you would need multiple people capable of running the communication equipment such as engineers, editors and broadcast talent. And last but not least in many cases you would need government or corporate permission to even get your message broadcast or printed at all. Today with the advent of web publishing all you need to create a message that has the potential to reach hundreds of millions of people is a computer with internet access. Mass communication has gone personal and with the dropping prices of computers and web access that in many cases is free, taking your message to the people has never been easier.
