Why should partial-birth abortion be made illegal?
*Supporters of partial-birth abortion agrue that is should be legal in case of severe defects found in the unborn baby.  According to physicians Bryon C. Calhoun, James S. Reitman, and Nathan J. Hoeldtke, severely defective babies will die naturally while in utero or shortly after birth.

*Partial-birth abortions are not necessary to save the mother's life.  According to Bopp and Cook, Alan Guttmacher, M.D., a founder of Planned Parenthood, believes that any mother can survive a pregnancy, even if she has a terminal illness such as cancer.  The American Medical Association states that "'it is not medically intended' and 'is not good medicine'" (qtd. in Bopp and Cook: 14).

*Partial-birth abortion takes away the unborn child's right to live.  According to Robert George, political theorist at Princeton University, "[a]t no point in embryogenesis does the distinct organism that came into being when it was conceived undergo substantial change or a change in natures.  It is human and will remain human" (qtd. in Reiman: 59).  According to Bonnie Steinbock, who is pro-choice and a professor at the University of Albany, pro-life supporters believe that human life begins at conception.  The child's unique genetic code that develops organs and personality traits is present.  Pro-life supporter Don Marquis, University of Kansas philosophy professor, states that abortion deprives unborn children of the chances of "experiences, activities, projects, and enjoyments" (qtd. in Steinbock: 60).
