The weeks that followed were a blur of excitement and terror. Every time James and I found ourselves together someone would unknowingly interrupt us.
We would be sharing a kiss under a tree in the park when a familiar voice would echo past; or we would be making love in the privacy of my bedroom when Charlie or Matt would come knocking at the door asking if we were still looking for that missing sock. Sure, we had some close shaves but it was worth it, we were happy just being in each others company, content with how things were, completely oblivious to what couldnt be seen; but not for long Oh crap. I grumbled and looked down at the perfectly white pair of knickers that had just slid down my ankles and were now resting on my feet. You okay in there? my mum called from outside that bathroom door. Yeah, Ill be right out I mumbled back and pulled my knickers back up as I stood up from the toilet seat. Whats wrong sweetheart? my mum asked as I stumbled down the hall and in to my bedroom where Charlie was still asleep. My period is still not here. I sighed miserably and looked up at the calendar, It didnt come last month either. Hun youre only sixteen, your periods can fluctuate for a few years. Mum soothed and mindlessly began picking up Charlies dirty underwear from the floor. Yeah I know but my voice trailed off, not wanting to give away anything about my newly found sex-life. Im sure its nothing to worry about, if its still not come by next week I will take you to see Dr. Chunder, until then just chill out. If you are too stressed it wont come either. I nodded silently and watched her scurry around the room like a headless chicken, desperately trying to tidy the bedroom. What time are you two going out? she asked, giving Charlie a brief nod. About twelve, James will be round about half eleven. I answered quietly. Mentioning Jamess name made chills smother my body. Was I pregnant? Could it be that we had somehow done something wrong? Could I be having Jamess child? MUUUUUUM! Mum and I both looked up at Charlies bunk where he was groaning loudly and shielding his eyes from the light coming through the window. Yes darling? mum answered politely, knowing full well what he was angry about. Youre making such a racket! he grumbled and covered his face with his pillow. I told you that I would be cleaning your room today, whether you were up or not. Mum explained calmly. Its the crack of dawn! Charlie cried. Its eleven oclock. Mum sniggered and threw a pair of clean boxers at him, Get dressed Charlie and help or youre not going out with Stef and James. Who said she was invited anyway. Charlie mumbled and pulled the boxers under the duvet with him. James said. I smirked and rolled off of my bunk so that I could stare him in the eye, Were going to the cinema to see A Womans Tale. No we bloody well are not! Charlie protested, Its a chick-flick! James doesnt mind. I folded my arms defiantly across my chest. Cos Jamess gay. Charlie cried, exasperated. Well have none of that please. Mum scolded from the doorway. Sorry but if hes invited a girl to see a movie with the guys and then agreed to see a chick-flick hes either gay or in love with Stef! Charlie laughed. I laughed awkwardly and ran my fingers through my hair, Must be gay then I mumbled and left the room. I flew down the stairs and in to the kitchen before sliding down the wall and resting my head in my hands. Are you okay darling? mum murmured from next to me, still holding handfuls of Charlies washing. I nodded silently, too choked up to talk. Well, this is interesting isnt it? W-what is? I stuttered. I was wondering when you two would get together. Mum smiled softly and slid down next to me, dropping Charlies putrid scented clothes down in the doorway. Who? I mean how..? my head began to spin with confusion, did mum know? Look at this mum dawdled over to the cabinet above the oven where she had always kept the photo albums, much to dads dislike. He would always say that one day one of us would burn the kitchen down and all our memories would go with it. Here. Mum handed me a blue and green photo album and opened it up. The first picture showed me, Charlie and James when we were about two or three. James and I were holding hands and in our free hands we were clutching buckets, Charlie was covered in sand and had tears streaming down his little face. The next photo showed us all, playing on a bouncy castle, Charlie was standing surrounded by childrens shoes and crying his heart out, Matt was bouncing up and down on the bouncy castle whilst James and I seemed to be deep in conversation in the far corner. Do you remember that holiday? mum asked softly. I shook my head and dried my cheeks with the back of my hands. Mrs Bourne allowed us to take James away to Blackpool with us for a long weekend away. One afternoon we went down to the beach and you and James kept giving each other secretive looksno one knew what you two were up to until you filled your buckets with sand and literally buried poor old Charlie with it. He was so upset it took three hours to stop the tears. Mum grinned down at me, To cheer him up dad suggested we all go to the fair the next day. Matt, James and Charlie ran straight to the bouncy castle and began to play. You were very hurt that they wouldnt let you join in so burst in to tears right there in front of everyone. What happened? I interrupted impatiently. To tell you the truth I dont really know. The three boys started fighting, then James shoved Charlie off the bouncy castle and came and gave you a hug. The two of you went off to play on your own. You and James looked so cute all huddled up whispering that I just had to take the picture. Mum flicked through the album to reveal more pictures of James and I together. Each one showed the two of us huddled close togetherwith Charlie in the background. It was as if we had been together our whole lives and just kept it secret. So secret that we didnt even know. Charlie will be very upset. What? When he finds out about you and James. He already knows. Came a familiar voice from the doorway. I spun around to see Charlie at the door, standing with his hands on his hips and his hair still ruffled from his bed. I heard everything. |
