Carmen's Paz
Rising Spanish actress Paz Vega will star in the new screen version of “Carmen” for director Vicente Aranda (Juana La Loca). Filming will start next week on the film, which promises to be based, not on the classic opera by Bizet, but on the works of French writer Prosper Merimee, who on a trip to Spain explored the personal history of Carmen as a troubled woman. According to Aranda, Carmen was the first “fatal” woman in the history of literature who “needs a fast paced era such as the 21st century in order to exist.” Vega rose to fame in Spain and abroad for her portrayal of the beautiful vagabond Lucia in Julio Medem's “Sex & Lucia.” She will next appear on screen in Pedro Almodovar's “Talk to Her” which opens in the U.S November 22nd.
