Getting Started in Sheep
You should get the 4-H Sheep Handbook and the 4-H guide for your grade from your 4-H leader, local extension office, or State extension office. These booklets provide a lot of general information you need to know for completing your project. They help you set and reach goals by keeping a record book. A good record book is a very important part of the project.
Take notes and record information on a tablet first. Write your goal at the top of each page. This will keep you on the right track and keep your record book neat.
Talk to your leader about your project. If they do not know much about sheep, visit a sheep farm, talk to your veterinarian, or make a new friend with someone who does. Visit internet sites and web pages like my shepherd page.
Now you must decide what kind of sheep you want based on your goal. Most beginners start with a market lamb. They are easier to care for than breeding sheep. For shows you just wash and shear. Some do choose breeding sheep. Just plan on working a little harder.
Decide where your sheep will live and prepare the pen.
They'll need shade, water, forage or hay, and a feed trough.
At first you will just need feed and minerals. You may need a hose if your water source isn't natural. Later you will need grooming supplies.
Now buy your sheep and bring it home.
GET STARTED AND GOOD LUCK.
