The Confederacy

Simon Marple, 18th Virginia Cavalry, Co. F, enlisted on Nov. 20, 1862 at Stribling Springs, Va. for the duration of the war.  He was wounded on Sept. 19, 1864 in the Third Battle of Winchester.  He was paroled at Winchester on April 19, 1865.  He was unable to write his name and was 35 years of age in 1865.  He was 5 feet 11 1/2 inches tall, with dark complexion and hair and black eyes.

James Henry Marple, 33rd Virginia Infantry, Co. D, enlisted on May 19, 1861 at Winchester, Virginia.  Was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on April 23, 1862.  Wounded in the arm (fractured) on August 27, 1862, at the Battle of 2nd Manassas.  Died of wounds on September 19, 1862.

James Perry Marple, 33rd Virginia Infantry, Co. D, enlisted on May 12, 1861 at Winchester, Virginia.  Killed in action at the Battle of 2nd Manassas on August 27, 1862.

Joseph Marple, 33rd Virginia Infantry, Co. D, enlisted on May 12, 1861 at Winchester, Virginia.  Taken prisoner on August 29, 1862 at Manassas.  Exchanged as prisoner and returned to duty on Nov. 1, 1862.  Deserted August 1, 1863 (after the Battle of Gettysburg).

The Union

Richard S. Marple, 66th Illinois Infantry, Co. G, was in the First Independent Company, Ohio Volunteer Sharpshooters.  He enlisted after the unit became part of the 66th Illinois Infantry, on January 4, 1864.  He was wounded in the battle of Ley's Ferry, Georgia on May 14, 1864 and was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability on March 21, 1865.

William H. Marple, 43rd Ohio Infantry, Co. B, enlisted on October 5, 1861 at the age of 17.  He died on November 2, 1862, at Evansville, Indiana.  Cause is not mentioned, but it was more than likely from disease.

Joseph Marple, 50th Ohio Infantry, Co. F,
enlisted on August 14, 1862 at the age of 22.  He was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability on November 24, 1862 at Louisville, Kentucky.  The unit had been in battle at Perryville, KY on October 8, 1862.

James A. Marple, 62nd Ohio Infantry, Co. K,
enlisted on October 20, 1864 at the age of 28.  He was drafted.  He was transferred to Co. D on August 23, 1865, then to Co. K, 67th Ohio Infantry on September 1, 1865.

James W. Marple, 63rd Ohio Infantry, Co. G,
enlisted on October 26, 1861 at the age of 30.  He died of disease at Camp Clear Creek, Mississippi on July 25, 1862 and is buried in Corinth, Miss., Section A, Grave 380.

Hiram B. Marple, 142nd Ohio Infantry, Co. H, enlisted on May 2, 1864 at the age of 22 for 100 days service.  He was mustered out with the company on September 2, 1864.

Jonah L. Marple, 159th Ohio Infantry, Co. G, enlisted on May 2, 1864 at the age of 28 for 100 days service.  He was mustered out with the company on August 24, 1864.

Thomas W. Marple, 191st Ohio Infantry, Co. K, enlisted on January 28, 1865 at the age of 37.  His unit served garrison duty at Winchester, Virginia until they were mustered out of service on August 27, 1865.

John Marple, 4th Pennsylvania Infantry, Co. K,
enlisted on April 20, 1861 for three months' service.  The unit was mustered out on July 20, 1861 just before the Battle of Rull Run. 

John Marple, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Co. H, enlisted on September 24, 1861 as a corporal.  He was discharged in 1864.  This unit was known as Rush's Lancers and were the only until to carry lances in the war.  They continued this practice until 1863.

Amos Marple, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Co. H,
enlisted on September 24, 1861.  He was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability - date unknown.

Charles H. Marple, 88th Pennsylvania Infantry, Co. K, enlisted September 20, 1861 and was transferred to Co. K on Dec. 1, 1861.  Charles was present at Gettysburg and in the retreat from the First Day's fighting, was captured and sent to Richmond.  He was exchanged later in the year and returned to the 88th Penna.  He was promoted to sergeant on June 9, 1865 and mustered out with the company on June 30, 1865.
