The Neighborhood: South Chicago

||||||||||
Within a city of over three million, the South Chicago neighborhood has a distinct socio-cultural niche on Chicago's southeast side. An area historically dominated by steel mills, South Chicago's eastern boundaries are marked by Lake Michigan and the Calumet River - still an important industrial corridor. To the north, South Chicago borders the South Shore neighborhood along 79th street. The neighborhood's western edge is defined by South Chicago Avenue, running southeasternly from 79th and Stoney Island to 95th and Brandon. Immigration, industrialization, urbanization, and unionization each stand as distinct themes in the history and personality of this dynamic neighborhood. The community continues to redefine itself in light of a post-industrial economy, seeking to highlight its diverse assets, peoples, and geography.
