It was a great episode-the best so far this season. But I'm concerned about the continuity. Cassandra Spender told mulder that his sister was with the aliens. If we're to believe anything that happened in the mythology (Samantha clones, hybrids, etc.) how can we accept this new twist and deny that SAmantha had nothing to do with colonization? This episode is similar to Paper Hearts but in SUZ it seemed like a stretch for the writers to say that Mulder was personalizing the case. I was like "Why is Scully saying that Mulder is personalizing this case? (what a cliche line, btw) He hasn't shown any signs of doing that..." He WASN'T personalizing the case in the beginning. How was this case similar at all to what happened to samantha besides that they're both missing children's cases? The scenarios are different. Circumstances were different (mulder was w/ samantha, not mom). I don't see how Mulder could make a personal connection until his mother phoned, at least. If she was thinking about the case, that might have triggered his own emotions. In Paper Hearts, Samantha's abduction scenario was similar to that of the murdered girls, and the way The Mad Hatter (i forget the guy's real name) explained how he abducted samantha was a realistic contrast to alien abduction. In SUZ it seems less believable that Sam was taken by this "Santa Claus" because of all the mythology that supports the alien abduction. The Samantha-was-murdered idea is weakened by the mythology now. If SUZ had aired a year or two ago it would've been flawless in its plot. I felt like instead of adding a twist to the samantha issue SUZ created more inconsistencies and made it more confusing, complicated. Also, how could Mulder believe that Samantha was part of the Santa Claus kidnappings when Cassandra revealed to him the truth? This makes me think....hmmm...In Two Fathers/One Son, despite all the revelations, Mulder was very indifferent to it all, lacking awe and enthusiasm after learning so much. I felt he didn't care anymore after all that's happened. But after seeing SUZ, i thought perhaps Mulder was just sorting through all the information he was flooded with back in TF/OS and that he didn't know how to react to the revelations or didn't know what knowledge to trust then. Maybe he never believed his sister was "with the aliens" (although after hearing Cassandra say it, it seemed like a fact that couldn't be argued with...). If he never did, then the storyline for SUZ is stronger, but if he was not sure of Cassandra's revelation, it was never made clear. That makes interpreting things complicated.
