Review of Je Souhaite by Sue Brody No lo me gusta. Well, IMHO this ep was pretty dreadful for the first fifty minutes. I thought we were OVER the lite eps, but what did I know? Are we going to get a season 8 of this idiocy? I want to know, b/c if we are, let me know right now so I can start programming WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE. I am not going to say that the last 10 minutes *saved* it, but I will say the last 10 minutes gave the ep a point. Or two. (Although apparently this was a ripoff of Aladdin, where the genie gets his final wish, so this takes away any spec of originality might have contained. Damn.) Anyway, one of the lessons to be learned was, as Jenni noted, that one person can't really change the hearts of six billion people, b/c if religion can't, one man can't, so altruism isn't truly possible. I loved the way everyone disappeared except Mulder and Jenn after Mulder's first wish; I actually thought we would see people sitting around holding hands and singing Kumbaya. Oh, well. The image of a silent, people-less world worked, too. Scully's point was that the journey is as important as the destination and that it isn't one man's place to teach the world how to behave (and then strains of "I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony came into play, and I had to shake that scary image off). I think she also had a point. So that was about it for the episode, except for the wonderful image of Mulder standing in Skinner's office, cussing out an invisible Jenn and calling her a "bitch" in front of several FBI officials. Oh, and the very last scene, of course (both Scully and Mulder in Mulder's apt, in front of the fishtank, *and* Jenn in the cafe). And...um...where was the X-File? Don't we need an X-File? If the answer is extremely obvious, and is guessed w/in the first seven minutes of the ep, does it count as an X-File? Aren't there any X-Files left? I will make this brief, b/c frankly, who cares? There were a few amusing exchanges, but nothing really noteworthy, and Anson and his brother were stereotypically stupid, pure and simple. Plus the magic carpet (Persian rug) made me gag. At least they didn't go w/ the magic teapot (get it?). The "Show Me" State. Why? Yes, I *know* that is the state motto of Missouri, but I was just wondering why that was chosen. I figured there *must* have been reason. I am searching here, so bear w/ me. And then we have a jinni who can show us what we want or think we want to see? Oh, I am just laughing uproariously. Mark Twain Trailer Court. I don't realy get it, but it just seemed funny to me. (It's b/c we are in Missouri, right?) It was a lot funnier in Bad Blood, though, when the name of the motor lodge changed, plus there was a reason for it M v. S pov). And who wrote "You suck!" on the boat? Mulder's reference to it being the Titantic was very tired. Okay, is it just me, or is Scully getting more and more goofy every episode? And why *is* she so happy? What happened that passed me by? Yes, I want her to be happy sometimes, too (as she notes in Mulder's apt she is--hey, I would be, too!), and not look stricken in every ep, but she looked like she was five years old playing paint by numbers w/ Anson Stokes. And then keeping the body, and...gosh, every time she investigates anything these days, she looks as if she is about to burst out laughing. Is she just finding the premises so ludicrous that she can't keep a straight face? I am baffled. Ha ha. Mulder and Leslie singing the "I Dream of Jeannie" theme. Ha ha ha. I am laughing. Really. No, I am. No, really... My friend said it was cute. I cringed the whole time. Not amused. Is Scully becoming Mulder? I swear to God, they have her becoming Mulder (esp. when she was trying to defend dead body Anson's missing body). Is this JUST IN CASE there is no Mulder next year (highly unlikely, but who knows)? I am not the first to propose this, but now I really think it's so. Of course, Mulder ultimately gets it right, so not *everything* has changed, but Scully is certainly "open to extreme possibilities," which *is* nice to see. Nice green sweater. Very nice. I have never seen Scully wear that kind of sweater before. Leslie wears a Lynyrd Skynyrd t-shirt. Hum. Freebird, anyone? Any relevance? The jinni was wryly amusing. Will Sasso as Leslie Stokes did a good job, too. I had no problem w/ the *acting* in this ep, just *why* this ep was written in the first place (er...filler?). Was it original? No. Scary? No. Funny? Not really. Does Buffy do it much better? Yes, yes, yes. Watch Spike on Buffy for the *right* way to mesh the absurd/surreal w/ amusement (and Angel if you want humor crossed w/ a compelling mytharc). But God, I loved that LOOK Mulder has when he finds out he gets three wishes. I was rather hoping he would: --destroy CSM and his cronies and solve the alien crisis --call FOX and tell them to cancel S8 --walk off into the sunset w/ Scully, holding hands Too bad I didn't get any input. So....his final wish was for Jenn to get a large cup of coffee and watch the world go by. That was nice and entirely altruistic. But *really* I think his final wish was to spend the night in an apt w/ Scully in a tight white t-shirt, drinking beer and watching Caddyshack. He got it, so he won, Jenn won, and the rest of us? What did *we* get? A nice final minute, sure, but...didn't compensate for what went before it. Again, JMHO. Well, maybe next week there will be some sort of tension and excitement (it *is* a mytharc and a season (series?!) finale), but I no longer place any bets. If Krycek, CSM, and Marita are in it, it can't be all bad, can it? Don't answer that.
