Review of HUNGRY by Sue Brody

I have to ask: What the heck was the point of this ep? I mean, really, what
was it? I am going to be very negative now, prob. as negative as I've ever
been about a Vince Gilligan ep (even more so than I was re: Three of a
Kind), so turn back now if you want to read an upbeat review. This isn't an
UPBEAT review. And I'm not HUNGRY anymore. Nor was I while I watched. I was
bored, though. I think I looked up at the clock every five minutes or so,
saying, Um, will I start to like this better at some point? Sadly, the
answer was Nope, not going to happen. The highlight of this ep was the
promo for next week's Millennium ep. Lance Henricksen ROCKS
and...well...there *may* be a moment in the ep that Shippers everywhere
will rejoice over. <g>

Okay, I thought that Leonard Betts or Home was the grossest ep, but Hungry
is close, beginning w/ the blood in the sink that he is trying to take off
the customer's clothes, followed by the blood and juice running out of the
garbage bag. There was no sicker scene than when Rob takes out his teeth
and takes off his hair, ears, face, and eyes (ICK!) and comes out to get
Derwood, who is a very predictable ex-con, btw. Well, okay, the sickest
scene is probably when LB makes himself a new body, or when the 2Shy guy
sucks the skin off the heavy women, but this is right up there, and I
actually *cared* about those monsters/men. The beginning of the ep sort of
summarized the whole ep for me, and w/ the exception of about one minute
where I thought *maybe* Derwood was the villain, or that Rob was working
for Derwood, the whole thing was entirely predictable. BOR-ING. Even
Mulder's quips were inane, alas. Can I get you anything? Yeah, cheeseburger
and an order of fries. Sorry, bad joke. Yep, bad joke, bad ep. I expect
better of Vince. DD looked like he was smirking the whole time. Was he as
insulted as I was? And GA looked really out of it, prob. b/c she was
completely wasted in this ep. She might as well have phoned it in

Oh, and Mulder had this figured out from the beginning. Derwood was just a
way to get to Rob. There was no suspense for the viewer in that sense.
Normally, there is a reason for Mulder to wait to come to the answer, if he
doesn't know from the beginning--he is trying to get an *angle* on the
murderer--but since this was from the Monster's POV, we didn't even get
*that*.

An aside: I cannot believe that DD has weedwacked!hair again. Yeah, we saw
it in Sixth Extinction and Amor Fati, but now it's just so obvious. And it
took a whole season for it to grow out. *sigh*

Tonight's puzzle: If Rob's ear came off, how could he still hear?

How is Rob trying to do right? *Not* to kill anymore? Not to give into his
cravings? Why not talk to someone *before* the killing started? And the
short M&S dialogue about the brains being eaten...I believe that we have
heard similar conversations many, many times. As Bad!Willow said in a Buffy
the Vampire Slayer ep last year, BORED NOW.

Why did Rob start to become a compulsive eater? Why just in the last few
months? What was he doing before? How could he afford such a nice apt, when
he works at Burger Boy? And did we *need* to hear his stomach growling? Did
we need to see the burgers become brains? This was entirely *too* overt.
There was NOTHING to try to figure out.

Aside two: Boy, is Scully dressing well this season. Very low cut blouses.

Did Rob's cracking voice start to bug you as much as it bugged me? I could
barely bear to listen by the end.

What is the difference between this ep and LB and 2Shy? They say it's from
the Monster's pov, but wasn't LB and 2Shy as well? What was the point of
this ep? So he's hungry. So he eats. So he's trying self-control. This is
almost making fun of people w/ eating disorders. What was that bit about
self-esteem and bingeing? Just to say that it's really about biology?
Again, haven't we already had a number of eps on this theme?

If he's so thin, why doesn't Rob binge/purge? Where do the calories go?

Rob(ert) Roberts. Silly name. Gads, even his *name* is unoriginal.

I'm sorry but this whole ep was like Good Cop, Insane Cop (probably the
best line of the whole ep). Only this was like Good Rob, Insane Rob. Why
the *hell* is counselor Dr. Rinehart there at the end? Why did she take
such an interest? I expected her to take off HER ears, face, and hair! That
would have worked nicely for me. Monster Death Match Two. What kind of
sicko *is* she? You poor man, she says, as she strokes him. Hello???
Monster Fetish? Be that good person  I know you to be, she says. She was as
dippy as that inspirational tape he watched during he ep. Gads.

I hope someone has something positive to say about this ep, b/c I can't
even find a good QUOTE to use. Gads.

And I thought Muy Agua Mala was bad...
