Review of The Sixth Extinction by Sue Brody It's been so long I scarcely remember how to do this...well, I will do my best...be kind... It's only appropriate that the beginning of any season's first ep should begin w/ a Chris Carter...oops...sorry, Scully voiceover. And it sounded very Memento Mori in reverse. With shades of One Breath thrown in for good measure. This time it's Mulder, not Scully, who is in danger of dying. Of course, Scully is still skeptical, at least at the beginning of the ep (or how would we know it's her, esp. w/ her new, revealing shirt, very UnScully!like?!). Happily, she finally becomes more of a believer by the end of the ep. Not a *full-fledged* believer, like Mulder, but we'll take it. "I will continue here as long as I can, as long as you are beset by the haunting illness which I saw beset your beautiful mind..." ahhh. And who are *we* to disagree? Thank goodness "that which defies all reason" becomes clarified as the ep progresses. "In the source of every illness lies its cure..." again, very MM like. And interesting that Scully believes that *Mulder* was meant to find out about the source of power of the tablet but she acts in his stead. If *that* isn't teamwork and llove... This is not your season one (or two or three) Scully! GA looked radiant in this ep. Major shades of Darkness Falls, w/ the bugs flocking to the light and Scully trying to swat them away. They were green, too, though most of the North African Coast scenes were bathed in yellow. Note the movie music (many scenes w/ Mulder in the hospital). Wonderful scene when Mulder lunges at Skinner and then gives him the tiny bit of hospital gown w/ "Help me" written on it. Later, we see him writing "Kritschgau" on Skinner's hand. Who says there is no such thing as unspoken communication, ala Detour? Why does Scully have a sheaf (or sword) w/ her and not a gun? Is that not permitted there or was it not allowed on the plane? You *know* Mulder has taken weapons w/ him before, officially *and* unofficially. And when Barnes takes it, I wondered at her not having another weapon. Scully looks like a cover girl model at one point (it's all about the camera angle). Mulder suddenly has *very* short hair again. Guess they cut it in the hospital. Anyway, interesting story. Scully doesn't want to believe, but she keeps seeing the man (who *is* that man?) and has to, despite herself. The fact that the tablet covers the human genome helps Scientist!Scully believe. Kritschgau returns (I thought he was dead...guess not!) and lets us know that his life was for all intent and purposes destroyed trying to uncover what the government was trying to keep covered. Thank goodness Mulder can read minds (or anticipate thoughts, ala Gibson), so that he can find out that Skinner is under the power of Krycek, TFFW is evil, and that he has extraterrestrial powers in his brain. Mulder always has to know the most...this way works. :) He is *too* alive, as Scully says. A very intriguing prospect. Scully asks Mulder to hold on. More to come in part three... It's hard to review a story when it's to be continued, but I found this ep more interesting than Biogenesis. We don't like Barnes. Barnes bad. Barnes dies. Bye, Barnes. Let's see what happens to Kritschgau in part three. No way does Mulder love Foully. And if that is the way she loves him...shudder. 'Nough said. I am glad that CC realizes how repugnant she is... Scully, OTOH... WOOHOO! Scully becomes a believer ("brain activity could be extraterrestrial in nature), and Skinner concurs. Whoulda thunked it? And the scene by the bed--tell me Scully doesn't love Mulder. She might not SAY it, like Fowley, but actions speak louder than words. "I need you to hold on," she says tearfully...ah, yes. She calls him her friend, and her partner, but it's so much deeper than that. Fowley *claims* that Mulder knows that she loves him, but notice that Mulder *hears* Scully. Does he hear Fowley? If he does, hopefully he is thinking about what a bitch she is. ::shuddering:: One Mulder!quip this week ("Who ya gonna call?" during the monitor testing w/ Kritschgau), which isn't bad considering that he only says about 8 lines the entire time, one "Mulder, it's me" and one "You don't want to believe." More Phieisms next week, only on Fox. Next week looks even move intriguing...DEEP THROAT returns (yay!), Kritschgau (and is that Krycek?!) is there, CSM tells Mulder he's his father and can save him (and calls him Fox)...woah. WOAH. So, that concludes this week's musings, b/c mytharcs aren't my strength, and I need more information. But I can't wait for next week's ep, Amor Fati, so that means *this* week's ep was successful.
