"Biogenesis" Review Rebecca Bateman rebeccaxf@bigfoot.com http://come.to/the.x-files From what I can tell so far, I must be one of the few Philes who actually enjoyed "Biogenesis". I thought it was insightful and intriguing, and it really made me want more. From the very beginning, I was hooked. This opening monologue was one of the better ones. The dialogue was simpler, and the pictures shown, while reminiscent of Biology class , were really cool. Cut to South Africa and a bunch of yelling beach workers, and I can't wait to spend the rest of the night figuring out what's going on. And what is going on? So, there's an artifact of extraterrestrial origin containing passages from Genesis on it. This means what? I'm inclined to go with Mulder's explanation (after all, he's always right, isn't he? ) that this somehow means that aliens gave us our history. They created humans and the Biblical myths. So, poor Scully - it's understandable that she doesn't want to believe Mulder. Her disbelief has nothing to do with her skepticism and everything to do with the fact that her entire religious belief system is being turned on its head! The beliefs of Catholics don't jive with what Mulder's telling her. Speaking of Mulder, how cool is it that he is starting to read minds? But, what's special about him? What makes him like little Gibson Praise? Is it the fact that he already believes in this stuff so his mind is more open? Or maybe he was exposed to something, or perhaps it's just in his "spotless" genetic makeup. Who knows? Then Mulder called Skinner on his duplicity. I started to get confused. Why would Skinner betray Our Heroes like this? Yes, I know Krycek's got him by the strangle- hold with that nifty little Palm Pilot of his, but I don't understand. I believe Skinner is a good man, and I don't know why he wouldn't try to get out of this, to trick Krycek, to tell Scully what's going on... Then again, maybe he did. Maybe his nasty little "Dana"/Hand hold speech to her in the hallway (the handhold very reminiscent of The Movie and "The Beginning") was his way of trying to tell her, "Look. You know I never do stuff like this. I'm lying. FIGURE IT OUT!" Yeah. I think I like that idea. But, one thing I do NOT like is That F***ing Fowley Woman. In past episodes, I could dismiss her apparently duplicity. I had myself convinced that she was doing what she thought was best for the X-Files: taking over the division, turning Mulder in, cohorting with the CSM. Now, I'm not so sure. I still can't quite ascertain her motives; all I know is that I hate her. She picks up NonResponsive!Mulder in a dark hallway and takes him home to bed. Then, she answers his phone, and when Scully comes to find Mulder in the hospital, she tries to prevent Scully from going to him. Pardon my French, but - B*tch! Scully needs to have it out with her. She could have at least spit in her face or something in the hospital. Ok, so that's not exactly Scully's style, but you have no idea how happy I was when Scully put her foot down and asserted, "You're both liars." You go, girl! Go save your man! However, Mulder isn't exactly helping matters. Their relationship started well with that pleasant meeting in Skinner's office. Mulder was adorable in the Chuck scene, and Mulder and Scully were standing way too close to each other in that elevator. Caring and Protective!Scully is wonderful, and I loved her concern for his anguish. But, I'm really upset that Mulder didn't bother to explain to Scully who it was that answered his apartment phone. He knows Scully hates Diana. He could have said something about it. Maybe he was just really out of it. Uh-huh. And this right after Mulder had called Fowley instead of Scully from the university! I don't know how he could have thought that Scully wouldn't have cared or that Diana would honestly want to help him more than Scully would. ::snort:: Either Mulder's mental problems are bigger than we thought, or he really is a punk. Damn. How could he? How dare he? On the other hand, why should I trust the most untrustworthy? It could be that Diana is lying, and it was Krycek who called her, not Mulder. But, yet, why would she lie to whomever it was that she called? (CSM, maybe? And, contrary to popular belief, I don't think the CSM was wasted. I think his appearance will figure in later somehow.) Further, did Mulder sleep with Diana? God, I hope not. So, then what's the point of showing Shirtless!Fowley? The only consolation I can take from the notion that she and Mulder consorted that night comes from the next scene. Scully arrives at the hospital, and Diana says, "He was asking for you last night." In what context was he... 'asking', Diana? During a rather intimate moment, maybe? Speaking of which - ooooohhh - that hospital scene. Crazy!Mulder is one of the most depressing things I've ever seen. That beautiful, intelligent man reduced to a frantic, babbling idiot. However, Protective, Cornered!Scully is an amazing sight. God, I felt for her. Here she is, risking life and limb for this man and his beliefs, and she can't even go to him when he needs her most. You're right, Scully, he wouldn't be a danger to you. Screw Fowley and Skinner... I really needed to see Scully go to him, to see her try to fix him. And then he screams her name, calling for the one person in the world who can save him, who can be everything for him, and they can't get to each other. ::whimper:: How about that last scene, huh? I did love Scully's rather inappropriate beach outfit, but what she uncovered was amazing. I was totally not expecting that: an alien ship, containing bits and codes of human genetic material and remnants of our ancient history, buried in the sands of a south African beach. Whoa. The words "To Be Continued" - as always - are vile and maddening. This season finale was incredible. On a related note, this leaves some wonderful potential for next season's premiere. I want to see Skinner's motivation and how he's going to get out of this. I want to see what the CSM is doing, who those people he was with are, and how he's going to continue the Syndicate's work. I want to see how this new information about the aliens and human history are going to play out. Will new findings about our origins be uncovered? Will the alien rebels come back into the picture? I also want to see whose side Krycek is on. I want to see what happened to Dr. Barnes and what Scully is able to do with those pieces of the artifact. I want to see what happens to Albert Holstein. I want to see Diana get it *BIG* time. And most of all, I want to see Scully go to Mulder. I want to see her save him from his insanity. I want to see Mulder read Scully's thoughts, and I want to see Mulder and Scully against the world again. Season seven is too far away. (NOVEMBER?!?) But, if CC&Co (kudos to him and Spotzy, BTW) can keep up this intrigue and mystery for next year, the final season will be the best ever.
