"Its not like old times." ~ Scully
Continuity is a wonderful thing. Usually, 1013 can't manage to make individual episodes continuous, but here they managed to be continuous through five years! Has it really been that long? Wow, that's very depressing...
Anyway, I'll get right to it. The point of this one was obviously to show us that now Mulder accepts Doggett's involvement in the X-Files, but I somehow don't want to believe that. I don't think that our Mulder, the one who lives by his mantra of "trust no one" and is so very territorial when it comes to his files, would just give Doggett his blessing, as it were, to "be in charge" down there.
This leads me to a question: where was Mulder working at the FBI at the beginning of this one? He was obviously still employed there, but was he in the VCS, wire tap, background checks? Where? I'm sure I'm not even supposed to be paying attention to that ("its rapidly becoming MOOT!") but it bothers me. And now that Mulder's out of the FBI entirely, I guess I can kiss any semblance of normalcy for the remaining three episodes good-bye... not that this one was in any way normal, but at least with Mulder employed at the Bureau, it had the potential. Does that make any sense?
Anyway... you're right Scully, its not at all like old times and it never will be again. Somehow that's very depressing too...
Now, from a mytharc standpoint, I guess this one was okay... as I said before, I nearly fell out of my very comfortable chair when Doggett started summarizing Piper Maru and Apocrypha, and I was shocked that someone remembered that the Black Oil can body jump and irradiate people and all those other lovely things, but as I remember it, in PM/A the BO showed intent. It jumped into people because it wanted something, first into the diver, then into his wife, then into Krycek... I don't remember what it wanted (digital tape?) and I can't think of anything that it particularly wanted in this one either... of course, that was forgotten just in time for Tunguska and Terma, so I should be thankful for the little bit of continuity that we got.
Now for the fill-in-the-blank portion: The "flying ships" communicated through the radio to the men on the oil rig telling them to _______ and the Indians (I'm a horrible speller anyway) knew about this because __________ (genetic immunity is not acceptable) and thought that by destroying the radio, they would destroy these BO-infected people's ability to overthrow the planet and bring about the demise of humanity. The BO-infected people didn't kill the Indians sooner because _______ and also didn't infect Doggett and Mulder immediately because __________. ________ ultimately killed Diego Garza because of "what he knew."
I'm still trying to figure out Skinner's importance in all this. And is it just me, or should the tag line officially be changed to "this is an X-File, Mulder, we need you to investigate it 'cause Scully has to either be in the hospital or stuck in the autopsy bay?" And is anyone else getting really sick of Kersh?
Yep, typical mythology...
