"Its normal to be worried." ~ Dr. Perinti
I wasn't just worried, I was flat out nervous. I was terrified! I kept thinking they (being CC and Spotzy) were going to ruin our show by sending it into the soapy drones of TV dramadom!
Haha! Am I psychic or what?
Now it wasn't really BAD, per se, but it damn sure wasn't GOOD either. I knew there were going to be continuity issues and a few character moments that would be up for debate, but I had no idea it could be THIS bad. I think I'm going to open a fortune telling shop- I can do palm reading and tarot cards... ooh, and tassigraphy (that's reading tea leaves- its amazing what you learn from this show!)...
Anyway, Scully was way out of character. First of all she's actually skeptical about this whole doctors-killing-women-and-taking-alien-baby thing and then she almost forgets entirely about her own experience with the cancer and what-not. I thought she was out of her naive skepticism by now. You would think that if some of these things had actually happened to her, she would be a little more inclined to believe what Haskal was saying. Doggett to the rescue reminding her of her own past- what would we do without him?
And while we're on the subject of misdirected characters, what the Hell was Mulder thinking, nonchalantly telling Scully that he found her eggs way back in "Memento Mori," taking them to a specialist (really?) and finding out that they weren't "viable." I think a good time for him to tell her all this was Christmas Carol/Emily... of course "John Gilnitz" didn't exactly know that it was gonna end this way, but for the sake of continuity, go along with me here...
Oh, and NOW all of the sudden Scully decides she wants kids. No offense, but on Friday, Scully will be celebrating her 37th birthday- not exactly a good time to START having kids, especially given her profession and such. (Hey! Just like the adoption lady said in CC/Emily!) I really can't say that I'm surprised by her desire. After all, she did say to her mom in CC, "I never realized how much I wanted it until I couldn't have it" (or something of that nature), so I guess, yeah, 3 years later is a good time to do something about it... yeah right...
She's gonna be 55 when it graduates high school! Assuming its human, of course...
And through these flashbacks Scully asks Mulder to be the father- not entirely shocking that she'd ask him (I mean, who else? Frohike?) but I don't see Scully asking ANYONE, let alone Mulder... Hell, I can't see Scully wanting kids at all right NOW... THREE YEARS LATER.. but we've been on that merry-go-round already...
And when this "didn't take" (it damn sure better be artificial insemination they're talking about), how was this Scully's last chance? Was there only one egg in that lil' vile Mulder stole?
Now for some things that REALLY don't make sense:
- I'm assuming Ms. Hendershot is capable of conceiving... she said it couldn't have been her boyfriend (she checked the dates! Does she keep detailed notes?) which leads me to believe that she had never been abducted or had any tests performed on her, so how did she get into this mess? Where did she get the idea that it was an abduction and an alien baby? Process of elimination?
- Who the Hell is this Agent Ferra (or whoever- its hard ot understand Doggett sometimes)? Does he work for another government agency during the day and moonlight as an FBI agent?
- 14 weeks... don't even get me started... although Scully did seem a little weary when the doctor told her 14 weeks... "are you sure..."
-Why does Scully take Ms. H to an Army hospital? Hasn't the Military been at the center of all of these UFO cover-ups and such all along?
- No way! Documentation of a conspiracy to cover up the truth in the X-Files... oh Doggett, you're so creative! Where do you come up with this stuff?
- Oh, and Scully, what ever happened to TRUST NO ONE?! I tried to tell her as she was getting in the car with those men, but she never listens...
- And Scully's reason for not telling Doggett of her pregnancy was a cop-out. I can believe that she wouldn't want to Bureau to know because they might have taken her off of the X-Files and then she wouldn't have been able to find Mulder... oh wait, she hasn't even been looking for him, so that doesn't make any sense, does it?
I would say that as an occasional Scullyist that I fell sorry for her in this one. She's lonely and scared as Hell, but if you think about it, she brought it on herself...
Now, here's the really weird thing: if you take this episode out of the context of the show, forget about continuity and all you know about these characters, this one really isn't THAT bad... it would make a good TV movie on Lifetime... but that's the thing: you shouldn't have to take it out of context. You should be able to make sense of it given what you already know about Mulder, Scully, and the mythology...
Wait... I'm getting a vision... yes... CC... and... Spotnitz are going to... drag this out... until... the end... of the season... that's it, I lost the vision... someone is blocking my energy...
Rating: after all that, you're probably expecting a 0, right? Well I'm the psychic here, and I say it gets .5 lounge chairs out of 5. I actually kind of enjoyed it the first time, before I started my analysis, that's gotta be worth SOMETHING...
"Look, I don't buy this crap..."
