Talitha Cumi & Herrenvolk ~ 01/31/01

"The fiercest enemy is the man with nothing left to loose." ~ CSM

TC marks the mythology down-turn. I believe that up until this point, CC knew where he was going with all this mess, that he had it planned out. Then he ran out of his plan and had to throw it together as he went along. The result is what we're seeing to this day. A mix of all sorts of weird things that have nothing to do with each other besides the fact that CC has a fetish for them, so why not make them a part of this multinational conspiracy to colonize the planet. Sounds logical, right?

Ha! Yeah, right.

TC isn't really that bad- it's more of a MotW than a mythology in some ways. Jeremiah Smith is obviously one of these characters who will disappear without a trace after this arc is finished, which makes it hard for me to care one way or the other about him from the beginning. One thing did strike me as weird: how the kept comparing him to God. Was this supposed to elude to the fact that God is really extraterrestrial and/or vice versa like we learn in The 6th Extinction I & II?

But CC doesn't plan that far in advance anymore...

And I guess when Smith changes into Deep Throat (YAY!) and Bill Mulder, we're supposed to see how CSM's demons are coming back to haunt him... or something...

Oh, and the cliff hanger sucked, to be a season ender.

Now, Herrenvolk is strange. For one, it kinda almost attempts to have continuity but it can't quite seem to pull it off (there's a surprise...). It wants to make us care about this little girl who is supposedly Samantha and about what this MMBH is going to do with Mulder and Smith and Sam, but by this point in this arc, I really don't give a damn. I'm more concerned with those smallpox tags and such (not that I have a vaccine scar- if you were born after 1980, you didn't have to get the vaccine) and what exactly they're doing with that information. It's all very fascinating...

And now for the best thing: X is DEAD!!!

I HATE that bastard. All playin' Mulder like that.

So what did we really learn about all this mythology? Um... well...

- Samantha has been cloned as a child too (in Colony/End Game, she was cloned as an adult).

- The Syndicate has been tagging humans since the 50's.

- These alien hybrids can heal people.

- Mulder's mom has some sort of history with CSM, but I'd rather not think about THAT.

Now for the fun: Musings of a K.M.C.

- X tells Mulder that "a simple gun shot won't do" to kill these hybrids. Can anyone say "WITHOUT"? I think these hybrids must be DEvolving, they seem to be getting weaker and stupider.

- If these "drones" (as Smith calls them) have no language, how come they have a sign above the door bell that says "bell"?

- Can we not have a mythology arc without Mulder getting his ass kicked by someone? I just laughed when he and X fought.

- I hate X. I'm glad he's dead.

- But I also hate Marita Covarrubius. She reminds me of Barbara Walters.

- Oh, and 4 years later, I'm still waiting on her death scene... Covarrubius' not Barbara Walters'.

- I think the only thing that I'm unclear about is X's motives throughout this arc. Is he working with Mulder or against him or neither or either?

Anyway...
