The Amazing Maleeni - 01/19/00

"I think we're being led around by our noses." ~ Mulder

Well, this episode had it all: nice plot, genuinely benevolent criminals, 
and a case that, in the words of Homer Simpson, "wrapped up quite nicely... 
much quicker than usual." Top that off by being written by The John Gilnitz, 
and you've got one hell of a good episode.

Or maybe that was a good adventure of 'Where in the U.S.A. is Carmen 
Sandiego?'

I dunno, I guess that plot was just a little too nice and the criminals 
were just a little too benevolent or the case was just wrapped up a little 
too neatly, but it really did bring me back to my days of playing 'Where 
in the U.S.A is Carmen Sandiego'. Ya'know, where you go visit the stadium 
or race track or where ever and the people that work their tell you something 
stupid about where you're at followed by "...and he had flaxen hair" or 
some other tid-bit of info about the person, and then you went to the 
computer and set all of your information and it gave you a warrant for a 
suspect... those were the days...

I almost wonder if Mulder and Scully could've made themselves look stupider 
by doing that. They sure as hell would've solved the case quicker and more 
efficiently. 

So, honestly, this episode seemed more like a regular MotW from maybe 
season 4. It would've been one of the worst of that season, but given the 
S7 standards, it ranks up there with Amor Fati, in my opinion. Not good, 
but what are ya' gonna do?

- Who is Tony Randall?

- I don't like Scully's hair. 

- That guy that played LeBonge looked like a cross between an MTV VJ and a 
game show host on Nickelodeon... is that just me?

- Do you remember when Scully preformed magic by eating a cricket? I do too.

- Everything about this episode's characters screamed "stereotype" to me. 
Where did the creativity go? What happened to our tragically ludicrous and 
ludicrously tragic love-to-hate people?

- I remember at 9:30, looking at the clock and thinking "it's only 9:30??? 
This should be over by now!!!" Then I got some chocolate for energy.

The Amazing Maleeni was kind of a cross between Eve and Humbug. You have weird 
feats of prestidigitation and body contortion beside an episode that tries to 
be riving and not boring, but can't really help it.

Rating: 3 lounge chairs out of 5, because I feel generous right now, and I got 
to think of Scully eating a cricket.
