Redux II - 8/29/99 "You live the lie you have to believe it." - Mulder Mini-Review, Gethsemane: honestly, I dunno, I kept falling asleep... Mini-Review, Redux: painfully predictable, but better than Geth. Technically speaking, this episode was a gem. Great acting (most of the time), good music, good directing, and alot of confusing plot twists. But, from a phile's POV, I was kinda disappointed. There were moments when you just wanted to say "What"? Where the hell did that come from?... Allow me to explain: In the beginning, we see a doin's a transpirin' down at the hospital. Mulder shows up, yells at a few surprisingly unhelpful staff members, gets pushed around by Skinner and leaves. Oh, did I mention that Mulder looked like he was gonna faint when he saw Scully lying there, hooked to all those machines and whatnot? If I were a shipper, and thank God I'm not, I'd swear he felt a little guilty about her dying... speaking of shippers, I'm sure those loveable mutants had an absolute hay-day with this episode. I even came up with a great big shipper- explanation for the "I'm only half dead" line Mulder gives us. See, Mulder isn't dead, but because Scully makes up about 47.66666666667% of him, and she's dying, it makes him about half dead. Yay me! Pretty good, huh? Well, I don't care what you think anyway! It was pretty sad when Mulder took that lingering look at Scully before being herded away by Skinner and 'the Calvary'. But no, this isn't part of the big three times that Mulder cries... hold your horses... Later, Mulder is taken into Blevin's office to explain why Scully lied about Mulder's suicide (yeah, that "death" was a huge laugh). One thing leads to another, they tell Mulder that this is going to become a murder investigation, and Mulder gets pissed and leaves. As he's walking away, Skinner tells him to "keep playing it the way you are" as he reiterates to him that 'Yes, I am on your side'. Mulder tells Spanky that Scully's cancer was given to her by a "mole" at the FBI, but doesn't know who that "mole" is. About that time at the local racetrack, The God Pigeon is watching the Senate hearings on Human Cloning (the irony, oh the irony). As someone asks about the major technical difficulty that cloning would produce, CSM shows up to talk to TGP. They talk about the usual stuff, weather, medical problems, Mulder’s false death report, you know... TGP asks CSM if Mulder saw anything incriminating at the DOD place, CSM says no, then leaves. TGP then says to some man sitting behind him "You may proceed". Ooooooh, I'm scared... Cut to Scully, laying in her hospital bed, looking really tired and sick, watching the same hearings on a TV outside her room, when a large, looming figure starts to block her view. Oh, dear God in Heaven, its Mulder in public, he's supposed to be dead. Mulder gets this huge smile on his face and walks into her room. Scully asks why he's her, someone will see him, etc. he says that it's okay, and "they" know that he's alive. Scully asks Mulder to tell her what happened and he keeps avoiding the subject. The only productive info that comes out of this scene is Scully telling Mulder that Skinner is "dirty" and that she knows he's the aforementioned "mole". Mulder refuses to believe it, but before they can get into a full-scale argument. Mama Scully and Daddy Scully Jr. show up and wreck the whole thing. As Mulder is leaving Scully’s side, he comes upon the o-so-generous CSM... ... CSM tells Mulder that somehow he acquired a cure for Scully in that lil’ vile that he had TLG analyze... to which Mulder replies "Go to Hell", CSM uses some mind control trick (like Pusher, methinks) and tells Mulder that he wants to "explain himself", Mulder walks off with him and all is well... After Mulder leaves Scully’s room, we see that guy puttin’ together his trusty ol’ shot-fire gun... ANYWAY... to make a long story short (thank God), Scully has a religious moment, Mulder almost gets tried for murder, Skinner almost gets "exposed" as the aforementioned, CSM "dies", Blevins dies, Samantha returns, the leaves... ‘and some parts to a Mustang GT... So, what did this episode do for the plot? Um, damn good question. Lesse... gave shippers mush needed M&S kisses (calm down, on the freakin’ cheek)... for a while, we almost got our fervent Mulder back, and we needed some assurance that Spanky really was on the side of M&S. Other than that and Scully’s miraculous cure... absolutely freakin’ nothin’... made for some good watchin’ though. Musings of a KMC - I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed watching this time and again... theirs always somethin’ that you missed the first time around. It was nice to see some much needed M&S interaction... and seeing Sam is always good, even if, for some ungodly reason, Mulder was smiling while his sister was crying her eyes out... after rewatching Geth. and Redux 1, I’d say that this ranks up at the top of the mediocre category right next to "Eve" and such. - Now, what you’ve all been waiting for... the big three: 1. Mulder cries 1st during his conversation with Samantha, after she informs him that ‘her father’ (CSM) suddenly found Mulder, and that he had been looking for her... 2. Mulder cries the 2nd time while having a little snack off of Scully’s arm... okay, so he just cries and sobs at her bedside while she sleeps, but it sure as hell looked like he was a cannibal. Sad scene, though. 3. Mulder cries for the 3rd and final time after Spanky informs him that CSM is dead, and presents his with a picture of him and his sister that forensics found at the scene... blah, blah... One day I’m gonna do a top ten list of Mulder’s sob fests... one day... not soon... - For a professional assassin, that guy sure did take a long time in puttin’ that gun together. - Just me maybe, but Daddy Scully Jr. sure was a DICKHEAD...
