"What the Hell did that guy say to say that you believe his story?" ~ Mulder

At this point, I think Chris Carter was so confused about where to go with this mythology stuff that he didn't know what to do. So, of course in typical season finale fashion (actually this was the first of that often duplicated fashion), CC paints Scully as a skeptical spy who really has been appeasing Section Chief Belvins and the rest of the calvary and at the same time, by shear accident, just happened to win Mulder's trust, and Mulder as a recklessly zealous nit-wit who'll believe anything you tell him or show him except for the actual truth, which he's really afraid of admitting as the truth because he's afraid that he's wasted his life on a lie, which he really has you know.

Does that make any sense? Good, because neither does this episode.

I believe that these men gave Scully her cancer because of Mulder (I mean, you'd have to be a complete brain dead idiot not to) but not necessarily to make him believe in this lie. I always thought that they target Scully because they've known for a long time that all he really cares about is Scully, so she's the only thing that would bring him down from his on-high "I can find the truth" pedestal.

And besides, he's believed in this for years, even before he knew Scully.

Now, the ending is no surprise. Of course Mulder would kill himself if he knew that they did this to Scully because of him (for whatever reason).

And of course Scully is telling this story to the panel and basically admitting to us as viewers and them as professionals that she's been cheating Mulder and his gullibility.

So where's the cliff hanger?

And what did we really learn about the mythology? Not a damn thing because its all a lie anyway!

In the end, I think CC wanted us to realize that for once, Scully has her scientific proof of extraterrestrials and Mulder has proof that it's all a lie. There. We've changed it around a little. That'll tide us over for a few months.

WRONG!

But seriously, the episode really isn't terrible, if you ignore the obvious gratuity on CC's part. Its almost kind of interesting.

Almost...

(that doesn't have anything to do with this, its just in my head)
