Fight Club ~ 05/08/00

"That's why they put the "I" in FBI" ~Mulder, in the pilot; Scully (lamely), 
in "Fight Club"

Before I start, I would just like to say that last night's episode was 
pre-empted for a very special hour-long sitcom, starring David Duchovny and 
Gillian Anderson.

The premise of last night's very special hour-long sitcom starring David 
Duchovny and Gillian Anderson was two non-fraternal woman (same fathers, 
different mothers) who, when in the proximity of each other, cause numerous 
cataclysmic events to occur, such as making Jehovah's Witnesses nearly kill 
each other and sucking Mulder (played by Duchovny) into a storm drain.

Yes, it is very similar to "Sygyzy" (an episode of "The X-Files" starring 
with Duchovny and Anderson). Chris Carter wrote both episodes. They're both 
about girls who can't get near each other without people dying or being 
severely injured, and at the end the girls' behaviors and attitudes towards 
each other begin to spread to Mulder and Scully. 

The difference: "Sygyzy" was good. At the end of "Fight Club", Mulder and 
Scully have suffered sever injuries, most likely due to a physical fight 
between themselves. This is BAD.

Overall: This episode doesn't suck, it blows.

The difference: If it sucks, it has hope; i.e., it was a good plot, but 
executed wrong.
If it blows, it was bad from the conception of the idea of the plot, and no 
amount of good acting or one-liner references to the days of yore can save it.

The latter was the case with "Fight Club".
