Avatar - 9/13/99 "At least they were having safe sex." - Mulder Does this line say it all, or what? All right, seriously. It was not bad... I guess, compared to ‘Fearful Cemetery’ or ‘3’, but it most certainly was not good. Allow me to elaborate... First of all, I never wanted to see a sex scene on The X-Files anyway, but a Skinner sex scene? Started off bad: why was Mulder at the hotel? Every homicide that’s reported to the police draws his attention now? Then he tells Scully to go do the autopsy, which is fair enough, but boring as hell. Of course Scully finds the glow in the dark spit on this girl that Skinner killed, we had to get that paranormal reference in there somewhere. These are the good of the bad... it continually declined in keeping my attention until the autopsy scene in general, and the best was the office scene with Mulder and Scully bantering and being productive while exchanging ideas. Mulder’s theory of a succubus seemed to be supported as well as possible by Scully’s autopsy findings, or lack thereof. Personally, this would have made for a good episode, the old woman and all. Ol’ convoluted nature had to come back and bite us in the arss when we got that 2 second flash of CSM. What a waste of good character... and the whole Skinner set-up thing just didn’t pull off well at all. This episode leaves us dangling with unanswered questions all too often, and frankly, it brings back memories of the second season. They even gave the ol Scully getin’ knocked down scenario. I would love more character development for Spanky, but not this kin of character development. The only good thing about this ep was that we met Mrs. Skinner... not that that did us any good or anything... Musings of a K.M.C. - Who in the hell wears a bright red raincoat? -What does it take to make a good pseudo-mythology episode these days? Well, you take a few prostitutes, some completely far-fetched "let’s set up Skinner to get to Mulder and Scully" style plot twists, and the well known "knock that monkey down" attitude towards Scully, then top it off with a dollop of emphysema, and you’ve got yerself a ol’ fashend mytharic pard’ner! -Maybe I need to watch this ep another 3 times to get all of the symbolism, etc. but this completely confused me and made for some bad watchin’. The old woman was too... uh... prime time TV style plot twist maybe. -So begins the saga of "it never really happened": it was all just a bad trip on Spanky's part! Another open and shut case. Waste of time for the most part, although it did provide some good scenes. 1.75 lounge chairs out of 5 - 1.25 being for the appearance of Pendrall. "If I were that stoned..."
